When word spread recently that the venerable magazines Ebony and Jet were up for sale, a palpable sense of depression could be felt throughout some segments of black America.
This sense of depression would generally reside among those born before 1960, or at least those whose sympathies lie with the pre-‘60 crowd. For a certain generation of African Americans, Ebony and Jet were as integral to blackness as Murray’s “Superior Hair Dressing Pomade,” a “Deuce and a Quarter” and funeral home hand-fans featuring the holy triumvirate of MLK, JFK and RFK. And now, once again, like Motown and BET before it, a black media empire is being put on the auction block. Considering that Ebony and Jet were in existence before Motown and well before BET, the depression is perhaps that much stronger this time around.
The depressed among us worry that the potential sale of another black media property to perhaps a large non-black corporate media conglomerate signals the continued erosion of black capitalism in the post-civil rights era. These economic black nationalists bemoan the loss of something they consider their own. While such feelings speak to a certain sense of racial pride, those who hold such ideas personify the definition of Old School in the worst possible way. The fact is, Ebony and Jet have not been relevant for a long time, and neither have their supporters.
For those with a contemporary mind-set who have grown up either mocking the datedness of Ebony and Jet or not even being particularly aware of them, the potential sale carries much less significance. If anything, some might have even breathed an it’s-about-time sigh of relief. I know I did.
Yet for those who grew up in an era either stuck in segregation or its immediate aftermath, Ebony and Jet were much-needed national publications that confirmed the humanity of black existence when other mainstream publications ignored it. Like black banks , black insurance companies and black colleges, Ebony and Jet served a vital purpose in an era quite unlike the present, spreading all the relevant black news that other publications deemed unfit to print.
There was no better proof of that role than in Jet’s publication of the infamous Emmett Till photos in 1955. Their publication brought attention to the racial terrorism that ruled the South and helped to bolster the burgeoning civil rights movement. I remember once going through a box of old Ebony and Jet magazines that my mother kept. This would have been in the ’70s. As I rummaged through this archive of black history, I became transfixed upon seeing for the first time the surreal photos of Till’s mutilated head. At the time, I was about the same age as he was when he was brutally murdered. Though I was not born when that occurred, the magazine photos helped connect me with the larger historical narrative around race and blackness that I was only starting to understand.

It is another sad day for African-Americans as our young cannot see the value of preserving OUR history. Choosing instead to become absorbed in the mainstream culture with no identity of their own. The author of this article seems to trivialize Ebony and Jet and their respected place in our history. How dare you mock the generations that enjoyed these publications! We are your parents and grandparents, our legacy and our publications are to be cherished not trivialized. We are not your generation and have no desire to be such. We do not care to be the kids trapped in their homes too afraid to venture outside to play and glued to electronic devices with minimal human interaction. We are the proud generation that made a difference. We made our voices heard! With Ebony and Jet we transformed America into the America you now enjoy and for the record, these types of publications and our HBCU and still needed today. It's more obvious than ever that things aren't as changed as many thought they were (based on the aftermath of Obama's election). Judging by the article, it was most probably written by an oreo, educated in a white suburb, awash in self hatred neo-con. At any rate . . .Good by Ebony and Jet you will truly be missed!

The next danger is related to fiances dating russian woman. Among the Americans, who want to marry to Russian ladies, are considerable amount of divorced males in the age around 40 years -these are persons who didn't manage to grow to be finally house holders anastasia russian dating. In previous years, American and Russian newspapers persist in publishing heart-rending stories russian dating site regarding Russian ladies (as well as the Ukrainian ladies and other residents of republics of former Soviet Union), who, to put it mildly, have not been so lucky in such marriages. This commentary lacks the insight it accuses Ebony/Jet of lacking.
The reason that HBUCS and African-American-focused entities continue to exist is because there is a need. While the initial cause for their founding may have been legal discrimination, which no longer exists, the issues and culture of African-Americans are often continually overlooked in mainstream society. A quick look at many magazines will affirm this. You can't have a healthy conversation about cancer or HIV/AIDS without discussing how they affect African-Americans differently (not simply disproportionately). A women's fashion magazine should include makeup and hair styles that take into account the diversity of African-Americans; instead most show one complexion and hair texture/length.
I wonder if Mr. Boyd would take the same ax to Jewish or Korean businesses...
NOOOOOOOOOOO!
Love Ebony magazine. Shoot if it wasn't for Ebony black people wouldn't know what's going on in our community.
And I'm gonna be real angry if Viacom or some other white company buy them. >:(
Ebony is no different than a lot of family-run businesses. Many don't survive past the second generation. Ebony had become a bit of a fluff magazine over the years -- personally, I love the recipes. Recently it was starting to get better with more news articles. There was a good one on African-Chinese relations a few months ago. There nothing wrong with being a Lifestyles/Entertainment magazine by the way.

"How vain black people really are. The only race of people that had to have a magazine dedicated to them. I don't know whether to cry, laugh or throw up."
Wow, seriously, you probably don't know any black people. One, our texture of hair is different and magazines that cater to people who have naturally oiled hair, they don't cater to people who have kinky coily hair, relaxed hair or women that wear weaves/wigs. (If you can't see the difference then you should meet more people).
Two, our skin is a different shade (duh), and most magazines don't cater to dark skinned Americans, what what make-up they use.
Three, most have a different style, Urban. While I myself isn't urban, my sisters and they're friends wear different brands not to mention listen to different music, I had friends that wouldn't listen to anything but hip-hop and R&B.
Not to mention magazines like Ebony showed the other side of black America while mainstream America shows a disproportionate amount of degrading American-Americans, which is has done for decades and still does! Please look up the history of white Americans not allowing black Americans into their magazines, or showing issues that matters to us.
These are the reasons (there are of course more) why Ebony/Jet has such a legacy and why it will be mourned.
Here is how Ebony could have branched out into radio and T.V. and built up there website.
Radio - The two most popular AA hosted morning shows in America are Tom Joyner and Steve Harvey. Ebony could have sent their movie/music reviewer to one of the shows every week to review movies/music. This person could have directed listeners to Ebony's webpage to read his reviews or listen to his podcast. A Home Depot expert is on Steve Harvey every week.
T.V. - Ebony was around when BET launched, did they ever do a partnership? How about a BET reality show featuring a college graduate who begins working at Ebony? Could Ebony have a weekly feature on 106 and Park?
Website - I have never seen Ebony's website linked to any other website on the internet. I only found theroot.com because I saw it's link on slate.com and msn.com. You can have the best website in the world but if you are not linked to anyone else, you lose.
The Essence Music Festival does wonders for the magazine. I went with my wife for the first time 2 years ago. After the festival, she subscribed to Essence and she receives weekly e-mails with links to the website. Many black woman are loyal to Essence due to the great music festival experience even though it is not black-owned.

Thank you for your comments. I see your point on the website. You're correct, spreading the word and making sure your site is linked to other sites is necessary. In reference to the TV - again, I do not see why they should done this...this was not their niche. Your ideas with radio are pretty good, though. In reference to the Essence Music Festival- yes it is a great event. Essence has been doing it for a while. That is how they decided to branch out in a different arena. Ebony branched out into cosmetics, fashion shows, and hair products. They also have a line of greeting cards. So they did expand in other ways.
A quick note: I am a Black woman who used to subscribe to Essence, but no more for the very fact that it is not the same caliber to me since it is no longer Black owned.
very nice post
