It's not the most exciting message. But Ben Jealous is right. The NAACP's task in the 21st century is to turn racial equality into racial justice.
Ben Jealous is an odd fit for the position of race leader. He’s not a civil rights icon. He’s not a trailblazing elected official. Hell, he’s not even a netroots pioneer. But most of all, he’s not a very good preacher—his oratory is more strained than inspired, loaded with colloquialisms that sound dutiful rather than down-home. All of which partly explains why more people fidgeted in their seats than jumped out of them at Jealous’ grand unveiling before the NAACP’s centennial convention.
Big national advocacy groups do all kinds of stuff, but one task is crucial: put on a successful confab once a year. It raises money, the press comes, and it’s the one chance most members get to check out their leadership firsthand. So about a year into his tenure as NAACP’s youngest-ever president, Jealous’ Monday morning keynote address was a formal coming-out party to a membership that remains undecided about whether to embrace or decapitate him.
As a performance, the speech fell dead—a wonky jeremiad, during which at least one group of bored matrons swore he misquoted scripture. But the problem wasn’t just Jealous’ delivery. The message is as poor a fit as the man because nobody really wants to hear what Jealous has to say about race politics today.
Set aside all the buzz about the NAACP’s waning relevance—a clear preoccupation even inside this week’s conference. The group’s 100-year convening begs a more affirmative question: What is the role of a 21st-century association that aims to advance colored people? Jealous’ answer is a tedious buzz kill for both the civil rights nostalgists and their post-race eulogists. But it’s nonetheless spot-on. Namely, that the NAACP has got to do the thankless work of turning mere racial equality into racial justice.
Given how much pain and sacrifice black America endured to kill Jim Crow, it’s tough to accept a clear truth: Securing rights and breaking color lines was the easy part. Wrenching civil rights free from Southern thugs generated galvanizing drama, drew clear political lines and framed racial inequality as everybody’s problem. Rich, poor, black and white, segregation held us all back.
But equal rights and equal opportunity are not the same thing. The latter demands a far more complex battle in which we must fight villains—the broken criminal justice system, predatory lending, crappy schools—that utterly consume the poorest of us while remaining abstractions to many, many others. The fact that a quarter of black Americans live in poverty is a problem, but it’s one that the 15 million of us who are middle-class can go all day without noticing.
Which is why advocates for racial justice were failing to make their case long before Barack Obama came along and forced the question of their relevance. The NAACP has no doubt been crippled by its own failings—the financial troubles, the internal squabbles and scandals, the reluctance to meaningfully engage younger generations. But the problem is both broader than one group and more consequential than organizational shortcomings. The right has been winning the debate over race for more than a generation because it’s saying what everybody actually wants to hear: The civil rights movement was a towering success, so let’s all move on.
That everybody includes black people. In a 2006, pre-Obama poll of black men, 6 out of 10 respondents told the Washington Post that our problems stem more from what we do to ourselves than what whites have done to us. And a CNN poll conducted the week before Obama’s inauguration found that two-thirds of blacks believe Martin Luther King Jr.’s vision has been achieved. More recent surveys suggest that the tanking economy has dampened that euphoria, but it’s clear black folks still believe the same thing many other Americans do: Opportunity is there for anyone willing to grasp it.
So when Jealous drones on about the “school-to-prison pipeline” and payday lenders in poor neighborhoods—well, it’s not exactly fire hoses on kids in their Sunday clothes.
Of course, the NAACP was at best a reluctant participant in the civil rights movement’s dramatic, world-changing protests. This organization has always been more comfortable walking the halls of Congress than marching in the streets. But maybe that fact positions it to be more relevant today than ever. After all, while the netroots are rallying a throwback fight over a segregated swimming pool, the NAACP is suing banks for targeting blacks with the subprime loans that broke the world.
Jealous has more than once deployed a rhetorical tool he used again in his flat keynote Monday. He first stokes the listener by harking back to the glorious moment of Jan. 20. Then he pivots and launches into the hard facts that didn’t change on Jan. 21—that he woke up in the most incarcerated generation in history, for instance. His challenge is to make this absolutely relevant message about justice as compelling as his elders made their battle for rights.

Yes, I agree with JC3, it is our kids who are disruptive and inattentive in the classroom. As an educator, I spend more time trying to teach discipline than Reading. However, when 99% of Black parents are brought in for a conference the problem is not with the child who is cursing, throwing fits, and being disrespectful of those who want to learn. The parents see the teacher as the problem. These children get no leadership at home but we as teachers are expected to teach, be social workers, be parents, and guardians, etc.
Tom Massey stated, "But evil thrives most where there is no discipline and no education." This is true, however, evil thrives when good people do nothing. We need to drop the "I have mine you get yours" mentality and realize that it does take a village of strong, good Black people to change the face of the nation we built.
Banks and their lending practices have come into major question. The result of predatory lending has been devastating not only for the individual but as well as for the entire economy of the country. The effects of predatory lending to the economy are really colossal as it pushes the economy down into the hole of trouble. Just about anyone could go for a little emergency financing in tough times, a little buffer fund to help float you until payday without the hassle of talking to, in other words an easy loan. It is a small amount for a short amount of time. There are plenty of lenders out there to help you get the assistance you need. Applications can be taken over the phone or over the internet, and many lenders use direct deposit and will wire you the funds, so you can get online payday loan
OK, so Ben Jealous didn't exactly rouse the crowd at the centennial convention. That's because Jealous isn't the problem. The crowd is. Who's in that audience and why? What change are they pushing? What relevance do they seek? It seems that everyone's waiting around for a savior, but whether he's it or not, it'll take more than Ben.
Kai Wright has hit the nail on the head by pointing out that the challenge in front of the African-American community on the racial justice front requires a far more nuanced and multi-faceted approach, something that is, frankly, alien to the NAACP. Let's face it, its victories were primarily in simpler times and simpler situations against far more demonstrably evil forces. Now that much of the challenge is in areas subject to interpretation and perspective, a different approach - conceptually and practically - is called for. This is not a recognition that the organization demonstrates in any palpable way. And it'll take more than Ben Jealous to make this happen.
Education is a case in point. Yes, we need to demand more support for inner-city education, where most AA children are found. Yet, we also need to demand more from those children and their parents, a message that I have yet to hear volubly and consistently from the organization (or, for that matter, from the AA community's leadership as a whole). It's a two-front fight and the NAACP doesn't seem to be making much of an impact on either.
Here's the deal: the NAACP is one of the most important organizations in the AA community's history, but as impressive as this legacy is, it doesn't guarantee it a future. When this realization is reflected in the organization's activity (read = collective behavior), its future will begin. The real question, as Ms. Wright rightly points out, is what role the organization should play and, by extension, what its key areas of focus should be. The educational system and the criminal justice system are good places to start (as predatory lending is important but of a lesser order) in addition to creating a vision for People of Color on how to compete successfully economically in the 21st century and beyond.
A significant part of this leadership will necessitate requiring more of the organization's middle class participants and its lower and working class constituents. It'll be advocacy externally and accountability within the AA community, a grass-roots proactivity that the organization hasn't exhibited in a very long time. None of this is as emotionally inspiring and thus engaging as marching for equal rights. Because having rights (i.e., potential) is one thing; converting these conceptual opportunities into reality (i.e., justice) is a far more difficult endeavor. And this must happen in the era of our first AA president and yet be far more quid pro quo-based than in the past. As Obama's speech to the convention showed, the help from the outside will require more from (inside) the community, and it's in this mobilization effort that the NAACP can reclaim its future and, perhaps, make an even greater contribution in its second century.
Education and Discipline can shut down the predators in these neighborhoods.
Why do most of these people rent furniture? Because they can not or will not do the math.
Why do people buy lottery tickets? Because they worship money.
Why do is the liquor store the richest place in town? Because there is no discipline.
There is evil everywhere, with the rich and the poor.
But evil thrives most where there is no discipline and no education.
Spoiled rich brats prove it to us everyday. A lack of discipline is a terrible thing.
The predatory lenders, are just like the pawn shops, liquor stores, LOTTERY TICKETS SELLERS and furniture rentals. They are all evil and predatory.
However, the LOONEY LIBERALS running the inner city schools are the worst evil.
They refuse to use discipline. They do not insist on performance.
They allow predatory lawyers to "protect" kids from any form of discipline.
You cannot teach without discipline. Some kids require tougher discipline than others.
The worst oppressor of "Black America" is a lack of discipline, first at home and then in the classroom.
you could help out those of us black americans who are gay and lesbian with our struggle for equality - even and especially among other blacks. please help crate an atmosphere where we do not feel like aliens in our own movement or hidden from view like Bayard Rustin (i know some of you know who that is).
please give people like me a reason to believe that "my people" are not going to be the most visible face of the hatred aimed at your brothers and sisters, sons and daughters, and, yes - your mothers and fathers - who need you to take a courageous, prophetic stand for the good of all of us and the integrity of our witness for justice for all.
In my humble opinion.. the real fight for the NAACP is to figure out what is their new role, and what community do they serve?
The statistics about the Black community are tragic. Education, Income, Prisons,Healthcare... the list goes on. However, the "adversary" is not the same as it was in the past. In the past we were fighting for equal access, now that we have better access, what do we do with it? How do we parlay those gains into tangible progress. We complain about Brothers in jail. Yet, if truth be told, there are too many of our Brothers committing crime!. We complain about poor graduation rates, poor performance in school for our kids. Yet it's OUR kids being disruptive, disrespectful, and downright NASTY in our schools. Its our kids who don't give a damn about school or education. It our parents who are absent or complacent about education! We complain about drugs and violence in our community. Yet its our sons, and brothers, cousins and nephews, selling drugs, and carrying guns! And we do nothing! We rally about some kids at a pool, yet we say nothing about the REAL SERIOUS ISSUES in our community!
The NAACP should be leading the charge in attacking those issues. We should be pressing police departments to lock up violent criminals, of any color! We should be pressing schools to hold parents and students accountable for their own education. We should be pressing the government for job creation, healthcare reform.
This is the role the NAACP should play! Turning the gains of the past into progress toward the future!
