As a record exec, Steve Stoute oversaw the careers of Nas and Mary J. Blige, No Doubt, U2 and Eminem. Now a marketing exec, Stoute used his branding mojo with Fortune 500 companies to co-found Translation, a multicultural marketing agency, with partner Jay-Z. With his new book, The Tanning of America: How Hip-Hop Created a Culture That Rewrote the Rules of the New Economy, Stoute explores how hip-hop changed the "mental complexion" of the country: "The penetration of culture is getting into Middle America," he told Vanity Fair. "One's ethnicity no longer determines what their cultural drive is."
