A controversial Arizona sheriff has launched an investigation into the birth certificate of President Obama, according to the Chicago Sun-Times .
The man who calls himself America's toughest sheriff, Maricopa County's Joe Arpaio, unveiled preliminary results Thursday of an investigation into the authenticity of President Obama's birth certificate.
"We don't know who the perpetrators are of these documents," Arpaio said at a news conference, although he said he doesn't think the president forged the documents.
"I'm not going after Obama," said Arpaio, who has criticized the president's administration for cutting off his federal immigration powers and conducting a civil rights investigation of his office. "I'm just doing my job."
The Birther claims were widely debunked after various Republicans -- most notably Donald Trump -- implored the president to provide proof that he was born here and not Kenya, as many have accused. Last year the White House released Obama's full birth certificate and put the claims to rest -- or so we thought.
But that obviously hasn't been enough for Arpaio, who has many more concerns than a birth certificate to worry about. The sheriff, who jumped into the national spotlight for having prisoners wear pink underwear and handcuffs in an Arizona jail, is under investigation by the Justice Department for racial profiling. He is also undergoing a federal grand jury probe over alleged abuse of power.
The sheriff denied that this is an attempt to divert attention from his numerous federal cases and just another ploy to get himself re-elected to a sixth term.
"You say I need this to get elected? Are you kidding me? I've been elected five times. I don't need this," he said in a recent interview.
This probe will produce nothing, just as the others have, and Arpaio is an attention seeker who will continue to seek it until no one cares about him anymore.
