The Root is saddened to report that Eartha Kitt [5], legendary songstress, actress and dancer died on Christmas Day [6]. Kitt, 81, died of colon cancer [7] in Connecticut. Her career as a performer [8] stretched across six decades during which Kitt won two Emmies and took on various roles on Broadway and in films. Born on Jan. 17, 1927 in South Carolina, the self-proclaimed "sex-kitten" began performing at the age of sixteen with the Katherine Dunham Dance Company, touring through Europe and expanding her performing career. Her sultry voice and captivating presence [9] were unforgettable in songs like " Santa Baby [10], " though, Kitt is most widely known for her portrayal of "Catwoman" in the "Batman" TV series. Eartha Kitt was an iconic figure [11] in entertainment.
