When it comes to prenatal care and black women, the United States is failing miserably, and the consequences are deadly. A new report from Amnesty International [5] found that African American women face serious barriers to proper care during pregnancy and are four times more likely than white women to die of pregnancy-related complications.
The report, titled Deadly Delivery: the Maternal Health Care Crisis in the USA, places the blame for the crisis on discrimination, a lack of nationally enforced treatment standards and barriers to proper maternal care such as poverty.
