While New York City Police Department officers attended to the festivities in Times Square on New Year's Eve, Occupy Wall Street protesters had a designated area to attend to as well: Zuccotti Park down on Wall Street. As soon as the NYPD got wind of protesters attempting to retake Zuccotti Park, they made their way downtown to arrest 68 of them.

The arrests came after protesters knocked down the medal barricades surrounding Zuccotti Park. As the demonstratorsAc knocked down the barricades, they shouted that this was their year. One protester attacked a police officer with scissors; that officer was taken to a hospital.

Activists began camping out in the park on Sept. 17 to protest the inequalities between rich and poor and the alleged crimes committed by Wall Streeters and the U.S. financial system. The movement spread to several countries across the world. Mayor Bloomberg ordered the protests to be shut down on Nov. 17 because of intolerable health conditions, but it looks as if the movement isn't going anywhere.
