With great dignity and respect to Obama and his triumph to be President, I would like to clarify one thing. Although, Senator Obama is being recognized as being the first Black President to be, he would not be the first Black President. Through research and much discussion, I have found there to be 5 Black Presidents(Bi-Racial) prior, although, they are not discussed through our education system and most of us, don't really pursue the investigations to rightly find out who they are. In any capacity, due to the psychological and hypocritiical oppression that have denied us our true heritage, have also deprived us of our intelligence. These 5 Black(Bi-racial) Presidents have been praised for their good deeds of supporting Blacks as well as using them for political advantages. Who are they? Abraham Lincoln, W.G. Coolige, Andrew Jackson,Warren Harding, and Dewight Eisenhower. So, if this is a hoax, I really would like to know who was doing the hoaxing. Remember, there's a reason why Black History isn't taught in schools and it's not because it's Black history. It's because it's white history, too. -

hey i think obama should pick a white lady for vice, because black women are just to nasty, they smell and dont know how to dress, you see black women in the mall making noise and lookin so stupid with those raggy clothes, i dont blame black guys dating white women , they just so look clean and man they got credit and money, the brothers love that stuff , white women wear anything and look sexy, but maybe 2 out of 10 black girls look fine, pretty bad chances to get hook up,,,so thats why obama should get white girl for vice so the black girls can learn to clean up for thier men,,,, -

Great analysis of Mr. Obama's selection of a VP. My only advice is to stay away from Hillary and her cohorts. Mrs. Clinton has proven herself as an unequivocal degenerate and has successfully turned herself into Ms. Ann to be protected by her Mammies from mean Mr. Obama. More disturbing is the fact that Hillary???s creepy followers would like to believe that they are angry with Obama because he is a man, well??? the last time I looked, McCain is male. Perhaps Hillary???s followers should be frank and admit that their problem with Mr. Obama is not that he is male but that he is black. -

If he does him he may not get elected. He has to pick the "right fit" for America. While he is position to be the next president if he doesn't pick the right running mate he could lose a ton of voters. -

My point is just that I want to take credit for current state and maybe feel better about our progress.
Bigger point:
"Black people in the United States differ from all other modern people owing to the unprecedented levels of unregulated and unrestrained violence directed at them. No other people have been taught to hate themselves ??? psychic violence ??? reinforced by the powers of state and civic coercion ??? physical violence ??? for the primary purpose of controlling their minds and exploiting their labor for nearly four hundred years." Cornel West???s-- Race Matters
WOW. I cannot imagine trying to compare my misery to others. That is some kind of arrogance.
I'm hesitant, but dang it it is true so I'll say it, "Cornel West is wrong. Period."
Taught to hate themselves. That requires more therapy and introspection than I can imagine. I'll say straight up, I cannot fathom it.
Two things, I know that you do not speak for all Balck people, And, there are many, many, many peoples in the world, over that last 400 years, before and today that are in a far more horrible state of being.
I condemn all of it but don't pretend a Black person in the USA today or any day has it worse than a Jew in 1930-1945 Europe, a Tsutsie or Hutu in Rwanda, or any of far to many opressed, abused and victems of Genocide.-

You are right. You can't fathom it. You haven't had it inflicted upon you. And no one is saying that American Blacks have it as bad NOW, but as far as your "any day" comment, go check your facts. It' not pretending to say that the enslavement of Black people in America was as tragic as any other assault on a group of people in human history. Don't get it twisted.

It doesn't matter who Obama chooses -- if he doesn't take McCain to the mat -- and right now!
And he's going to Hawaii for a vacation?
Is he a fool?
All the Republicans have to do is photo him on the beach sipping a cool drink for them to turn him into John Kerry, wind-surfing!
Doesn't he see what they're doing?
By turning him into a "celebutante" they're eviscerating the impact of his Denver acceptance speech in front of 75,000 supporters! Now that's strategic thinking!
O-man, take Chuck Schumer's advice: Hit back -- and hit back hard!
Save the vacation for later. -

Looking at things in perspective makes it simple, sometimes its. But there are people that control (not a good choice of word) influence the totatl package for a party nomination. They too have to like your VP. But this piece is very insightful. Chi -

Man, oh man, oh man. If this article represents the realpolitick comprehension of Obama's supporters and if it mirrors his own conceptions, he's gonna lose by an even greater margin.
Obama undoubtedly has a tremendous amount of charisma. However, he is sorely lacking gravitas. If us middle-aged white guys are even gonna consider voting for him, he'll be forced to pick an adult as a running mate.
I can't believe that naivete that his supporters are spouting. Children, children, children, as much as you don't want to believe it, here in America, the grown-ups will always be in charge. Peter Pan is a charming concept, but it ain't the way things are. -

justawhiteguy--you can't take only a part of history to measure progress. I agree with you that a lot of things have changed in the last 40-50 years but when you consider that they never should have happened to start with, you have to include the full history of America and it's slavery crimes. I applaud the changes that have occurred over my lifetime but I can only applaud them by looking at how far we've come and that includes where we've been. So "don't minimize".

Dave,
You missed the whole point of these kinds of articles: you're supposed to end by telling Obama who to pick for #2. (Oh, wait, the whole point of your article was to encourage Obama to make the call himself -- my bad.) -

justawhiteguy--you make a valid point. But remember that if you calculate it starting from Ford, you might be saying that for just over 90% of our nation's history, it has been impossible for a black man to be elected President... -

Great Article. I think that we all suffer from statistics though. Your information is good but don't you think that it is a little misleading to put out the stats, "12 percent of Americans are black, 14 percent of our presidents have been named Bush, Adams or Roosevelt, but zero percent of African Americans have been president." without qualifying them a bit?
Here is my point: Before 1865 there was absolutely no chance for a Black person to become President. Arguably not before 1970.
My point is this. Based on your statistics the glass is half empty. I'm not arguing that there have been unspeakable injustices, I'm just saying that we have made dramatic gains in Equal Rights and Race Relations in the last fifty years and when you use statisics that include 232 years instead of 40 or 50 things seem a lot worse than they are.
I'm not trying to downplay or ignore history. Just put the present in the best light. Take credit for our success, not ignore the work still to be done.
If we start with Ford for example (start wherever you want / think is fair) Obama will be 1 of 7 or 14%, a little better than % of population.
I'd just like to take credit for the present (flawed though it is) rather than continue to rehash the past. Don't forget, don't minimize, just live today for tomorrow.-
