... it is because these men perform at levels that are without equal in the respective fields..." I agree. I watch with glee my brothers reaction to Obama. This sentence says it all. He is at the top of his game and men respect that even if they don't like his politics or intend to vote for him. Very interesting article. Thank you for your insight. -

Oh my! I'm still smiling at the genius of Mr. Woods' essay/analysis. I LOVE the "white collar masculinity" reference. It speaks volumes to the hierarchy of ???masculinities??? in this culture. Effortlessly however, Obama galvanizes the best of all categories. His very presence provokes and evokes paradigm shifts that are not common or typical. For a Black man living in America to so assertively ride this ???horse??? of political leadership, is a testament to the ???audacity??? of breaking free from boxes that would keep him [us[ reduced to mindless ???niggers.??? Senator Obama, unlike many of his predecessors, raises challenging questions about a stilted social justice system and the strategies required for a genuine re-positioning of the US as a true world leader. -

I'll give the "O-Man" his props, but I'm really not that ga-ga over him. I was a Hillary supporter to the end! I'm a young black man and I went to school with many black guys like Barack at Yale. The black men I knowfrom Harvard, Yale, Morehouse, Tuskegee, etc. equally, if not more exhibit and display high levels of "white-collar masculinity" and coolness.More significantly, many of us had positive role models of black men in our lives who were tested by deep hatred and racism, and who still managed become businessmen, educators, generals, engineers, doctors and lawyers, and have that white -collar masculinity the author cites. Yes, Obama is a present day superstar, and I appreciate that. However, he's still a babe in the woods compared to the first generations of black men who broke the color line in the corporate white -collar world and succeeded. Just look at any Black Enterprise Magazine and you'll find them, so let's not get things twisted. The O-Man is riding high on their coat tails and walks easier because of the paths counless others before him blazed!! -

"You're right. He's a scholar and intellect who's easy in his skin, graceful and athletic and tough. Really tough"
Come on bluegreen! If those are Presidential qualifications then I guess you would support Jerry Rice or Dan Marino for President, right? How about Joe Montana? He's tough, athletic, and probably smart, but Presidential material? Get real!
BTW: Aside from 'writing' a book about himself, what makes Obama a scholar?
Folks have searched high and low for any writings from Obama while at Harvard or working the neighborhoods of Chicago. You know what they've come up with? Zero! So please let's drop the scholar adjective. It doesn't fit. -

In other words, middle-class white men compete with the public masculinities of a Howard Stern and Ben Stiller, just as middle-class black men compete with the public masculinities of Flavor Flav and Pacman Jones. ?????? What the *** are you talking about? Howard and Flav as public masculinities? What a damn joke! -

Cool it JAJ, who cares what the guy bowls?! Bowling isn't masculine, its a bunch of fat guys rolling 9 lb balls down a wooden lane. I bet you're voting for McCain aren't you. Is he tooting his horn about his recent athletic accomplishments? -

Okay, I'll admit that I got my white-man crush on Obama when I read his post-Rev-Wright statement printed in full in the local paper. I had been leaning towards McCain, but then and there I decided that electing this guy as President would be good for America in many different ways. -

Your only evidence of his true masculinity is that he "plays basketball" and used to be a community organizer? Who doesn't "play basketball" from time to time? The guy bowled a 37! THE GUY BOWLED A 37! There is not a thing in the world that could redeem his masculinity or his blue-collar appeal after that.

macho white collar? whatever. Obama's appeal is that he's super smart and very charismatic. our political process hasnt served up someone like that in a while, so its exciting.
its also exciting to see some one from a new generation step up. the baby boomers are tired, re-fighting the viet nam war and antique cultural battles. its good to see some one focused on the future rather than the past.
mccain belongs in a museum. we dont need a horse and buggy president right now. hard core republicans have told me that they think mccain is senile. -

Why anyone takes Obama serious is beyond me. The guy has zero executive experience, zero legislative experience, and his attendance/voting record is 'sketchy' at best.
When I see him, I do nothing but snicker!-

What do you mean by executive experience? Have you forgotten that the man is a succesful administrator and a celebrated legal expert, It's only dim-witted people who would not recognise the importance of such a trained mind.

Having seen a few fools adulating Obama on television scarcely indicates that there are large numbers of white men out there swooning over him.
Truth be told, most of us find him highly annoying, strange looking (why is he purple?), obnoxious, and without substance. His highly MSM-touted "character" boils down to nothing more than repeatedly shouting weak slogans during pep rallies and opportunistic flip flopping. FISA bill anyone? The man's an overhyped fraud, and like all fads, he's fading fast.-

Ah, Typhoon...be honest...that fact that an educated, sexy black man (yeah, he's black you know how strong our African blood is) could very possibly be running this country soon, just makes you want to slit your own throat...doesn't it...come on...admit it.
Barack Obama is a very sexy man. Intelligence is very sexy. Being a fine ass brotha doesn't hurt. -

Like his popularity in general, the "man crush" is demonstrable evidence that the smitten are in love with their image of Obama rather than his rather meager reality.Like Peer Gynt,he is a collection of concentric membranes without a core and the logical product of a society that runs on sound bytes -

For many men of a particular generation and economic class, especially those for whom racial pride is not a factor, the ???man crush??? is really about our ideas of nobility and honor.
I don???t mean the manufactured, pseudo-machismo wear-a-flight-suit type, but rather the nobility and honor of a mystical chivalry. As little boys we longed to be the cowboy fighting against the overwhelming odds. We found deep satisfaction in the idea that it ???mattered??? to be on the side of bravery and dignity. Winning was always the only virtue.
Some of us were raised with the idea that true leadership and bravery are best represented by speaking truth to power. Examples include, Eisenhower taking on the so-called military industrial complex; Kennedy and Reagan speaking around the Kremlin and to the world while in Berlin; Mandela provides many examples (homecoming, election, 1995 rugby championship, etc).
Surely, Obama is no Eisenhower, Kennedy, Reagan or, for God???s sake, Mandela???yet. There is something in his style and swagger that reminds us of what matters. We want to believe that we will have brighter, greater days ahead of us if we are at his side. -

Great article. There's another reason for the intense connection guys like me feel about Sen. Obama...he's a post-boomer! Like me, Obama's grandfather served in World War II and experienced the contrast between the relative conservative attitudes of his grandparents and left-leaning beliefs of his parents. Many in our generation, in our 30s and 40s, have found a middle road between the New Deal generation and the 60s radicals. Best of all, this is a man who can relate to John Coltrane and Jay-Z at the same time...need I say more?? -
