To discuss running,
running the country, a black man running,
an African running America, you must discuss Race
including the difficult qualifying times
between the theft of our arrival and hate crimes.
Beautifully and witfully spoken by Ellis. This poem takes us to that Pinnacle Moment of Barack Obama's nomination for President as well as TransAtlantic and it's horrific journey...forced, yet, somehow, Obama emerges, a man who is Conscious, of Good Sense and Reason.
We are running with purpose today! Let us all be motivated to run for something pinnacle. -

I'm white, and I voted for Obama. I voted for him because I believe in his passionate commitment to bring us together. But secretly, as a white man, I hope that he'll inspire black Americans and help them let go of the pain of the past and focus on the future, together, color-blind, one. -

dmac, for someone trying to get this straight you have done an astounding job of totally missing the point. did you even read the poem?
I do agree we could do without the hyphenated-American thing. How about we're all just Americans?
Sadly, I had to question your commitment to logic when you asked how many countries with Africans in charge have been succesful. Even more sadly, I suspect a history lesson would be wasted on you. Have a nice day. -

Let me get this straight...If a white voters do not support Obama it is because they are racist. However when over 90% of black voters support Obama against a candidate who blacks have historically supported it is not racism. Interesting lack of logic. Do you really want an African-American (since Obama has a Kenyan father and also lived in Africa African-American is a proper description) leading the country? I mean how many countries with Africans in charge have been/are successful? I would much prefer to have an American as President. I don't really care what color they are. I do care if they obviously have dual loyalties though. Which anyone who self identifies as a hyphenated-American obviously does.-

There have been successfully run black civilizations before Africa was looted of its natural and human resources by colonizers and slavers. Most of the African governments of modern times are very young. Ghana was one of the first to gain its independence, which it only has had for 51 years. It takes time for nation-states to run smoothly. The United States had a civil war almost 100 years after it gained its independence. Africa is going to make a come up. It rich in resources such as oil. When is does, you'll be wishing you could call yourself and African-American, too.
