    i just purchased the july vogue italia. the black models are all beautiful... i picked the cover with jourdan dunn because i relate to british style (not knowing till afterwards that she's british -- or that she speaks out in the interest of black models).

    it's too bad the majority of the advertisers didn't join in and use black models too, like pinko, yamamay, and quodlibet did.

    and there's an article celebrating yves st. laurent, which somehow missed showing any photos of his favorite breath-takingly beautiful black model, mounia... wish the mag could be translated into english, since some of the articles seem interesting (i don't know italian). one article is titled 'hair so frizzy' -- uh, how about just saying 'nappy'? nothing wrong with nappy hair and it really is a better description, if the article is indeed about black hair. i just hope it isn't suggesting everyone straighten their hair. but it could be... sadly, with the exception of a few of the new models featured in the 'go-see' article, all my sisters have been styled with straight wigs, weaves or hairpieces, or... forget hair, just put a hat on her head or wrap it up.

    but hair or not, the black beauties look great in the clothes and inspire a shopping and self-beautification desire within.

    i've been searching online for an email address to italian vogue, so i can send a thank-you note to editor, franca sozzani. she and photographer steven meisel and crew did a great job creating a history-making fashion magazine highlighting the beauty of black models. it's eye candy for women and men -- of all races.

    btw, it sold out the first day in many new york city stores. people were actually fighting over it. the store i bought it in charged four dollars over the $15.95 price most stores are selling it for. but i don't regret paying the extra amount. who knows when or if this will ever happen again?

    Black isn't the only color. We need to see less white and more diversity period. Let's not segregate, relegating each race to his/her own magazine! Why not have the different races integrated together? Instead of a blonde, brunette and redhead as the trifecta let have an Indian, Asian and Hispanic. How about some beautiful mixed race models? Let's celebrate the beauty in each ethnicity! It always pains me to see asians, african americans and hispanics with bleached hair or blonde wigs or weaves, these magazines and the chocies they make have lasting impressions on our idea of beauty. Let's not forget beauty comes in many shapes, sizes and colors.

    I really get annoyed when everyone says "oh everyone is beautiful no matter what they look like". Personally, I wouldn't want to look at an ugly person..or someone who is too thin or too fat..there aren't that many beautiful women out there and lately all that I have seen, as models, are far from beautiful..FAR. I am incredibly picky and I know that everyone has beauty within them but in the model world..shallowness is key. Models must be exquisite, timeless, and pieces of rare art. And those actresses that try to be models and get nose jobs or lip jobs are absolutely horrid. They have jobs already and they look nothing like models. Please, no one take offense.

    I hope girls from my generation dont go by the reasoning that many of you have here... i think this magazine is more about celebrating a beauty that unfortunately goes unnoticed. but also, its a step in the direction of seeing all women as beautiful... no matter the size, shade, etc.
    f-racist white people... you just lend to the racism and ignorance. and TZ, you arent much better. as a young woman, i see beauty in dark or fair skin, in bodies that are lean, or have had the strength to bear children. they are all facets that should be something women are proud of.
    we shouldnt be bitching because someone thinks "oh, the blacks are whining" or whatever illogical view they have. we, as women, should be cheering for the basic idea alone... the idea that we may start to show all women as beautiful!

    oh, and btw (TZ) im damn proud of my pale, full-figured self, and i hope more girls will learn to love themselves for whatever they were blessed with, rather than listen to the bickering of a generation who cant accept themselves or anyone else. GO HOME AND TELL YOUR DAUGHTERS THAT YOU LOVE THEM, AND THINK THEY ARE BEAUTIFUL, INSIDE AND OUT!

    A political view is talking about black history? We all had teachers who taught on their subject but would also take the time to talk to us about anything. Sometimes it just happened-we got off subject but learned something else. Education is not a one track discipline. I believe the students learn math but they also get to learn about something that even their actual history teacher is not teaching them. And if you think that the educational system needs reforming because she spoke 5 minutes on black history then you are delusional!

    Let's focus on what is happening right now in the world. Politically America is on the brink of a new leader-he is coloured. We have been waiting for life to become "normal" again. Why focus on the lack of black models and gently and lovingly bring in the coloured girls and rainbow up the fashion world. After all, where is the diversity among the glamours and those who are privlidged enough to shoot them. Make the stand, and the world WILL notice and WILL embrace the change.     Madd-Max....I agree that the majority of beautiful black women are not purely black. But, have you really stopped and looked at the majority of white people(men and women). It is no secrete that the majority of pure white women are hideously unattractive- from their un-proportionate facial features down to their pale shapeless undesirable bodies. Lets be honest.... Isnt it true that there is only a minority of white women who are truly attractive and the majority of them probably have mix blood. Im inclined to believe that it is the black and not the white that makes the mixture desirable. About black men not wanting thier own kind... this statement is sad but true...but, it is not the white women they truly desire.Black men who only date outside their race are only trying to fit into what they feel is most acceptable to society. The truth is, the majority of black men prefer black women. More truth, the majority of white men want black women.

Yes, that vouge is publishing this magazine, but will it really make a diffrence? No it probably won't, yes maybe a little. But it's still putting everyone into groups...whites on there spread, black on the other. Honestly The World is ignorant!         First of all, the system of slavery in Africa was far different from the system that was created in the Americas. People in Africa became slaves if they were captured during conflicts or created crimes. They were allowed to become artisans and even soldiers. The label of slavery did not extend to their children. Black slaves proved more efficient than natives because they did not know the area and many people stopped selling themselves into indentured service. The slavery that existed in the Americas was cruel and unnecessary, but was a prime example of what people will do for money and status. Their love of money destroyed their morality just as your ignorance will one day destroy you. I pray that you will change before it's too late. There is no room for racists in heaven.

    People, lets clarify what this article is saying. No, black people are not looking for more publicity. I am pretty sure that we were not in the room when the italian editior made that decision. And yes, there are many colors, and ethnicities of women from all around the world whose beauty is just as striking. I think that Vogue highlighted black models because despite the many shades of color that exist in the world, the woman who is of african descent, of the darkest shades of brown have been and continue to be put down simply because their shade is darker. Even today, in america, blacks are seen as low on the totem pole, even though we have been on this continent since 1619, and have borne many years of abuse and misogyny by the caucasian race. Vogue is simply bringing to light an issue that is not only beholden to the modeling industry. To see it as some sinister plot, publicity stunt or handout is to make the issue seem less valid.

    lol JMA you are right on that one girl, about the lip injections and butt implants breats etc. I consider all women race color beautiful. They surely should step it up a bit put a new face out there. I find the magazines very boring now a days with the same complextion. They sure need more diverse models out there. We do live in a clourful country, we should embrace all beauty of race and colour. Some people just can't accept change. I'm looking forward to seeing more beautiful balck women on the cover of any magazine. ;') Wish all of you guys the best of luck in the industry.

    You know what? It is obvious that there are some blatantly ignorant folks on both sides of the color line. The insults are not necessary. If you dont think black is beautiful then fine, that is your opinion. But to air your opinion in the form of insults shows your lack of intellectual as well as emotional growth. Many of these posts fail to take a look at this issue from an INTELLECTUAL, EDUCATED point of view. It is an emotional response to your personal feelings about people that you probably never sat down to really learn anything about. This goes both ways, but I will tell my caucasian comrades on this blog: I know that many of you have never sat down to intelligently have a conversation with a person of color regarding their culture, history etc. You know why? Because you are in the mindset that YOU DONT HAVE TO! Its not important for you to know the "substance" of a person-no, color has always been your ticket to practice whatever predjudices that you might have. No one has to ask you what does it feel like to be white in america! You know why? Because you would not be able to even answer the question! Because you do not have to suffer the same indignities, and slights that many people of color deal with on a daily basis. And for you to say that it doesnt exist, or the common, "get over it" is to invalidate 400+ YEARS of abuse just for being a darker color. And as for my black brothers and sisters, especially the person that wrote all that mess about cursing white people-get it together! Your lack of intelligence is showing! Speak intelligently and talk like you have some sense! That kind of talk is not necessary. The article does not warrant such a response!

I'm quiet pale but I'm proud of what God gave me. My step father is pretty dark, and my brother is mixed so he's pretty light for a black kid. I love my family.     Difference is beatiful and instead of people having standards set of what is appealing and what is not we should learn to love are unique qualities, whether we understand what may be beautiful about it or not. No one person is 100% pure anymore, some mixtures happened along the way and I for one think your society is more COMPLEX, INTERESTING and BEAUTIFUL because of it.     What i really don't understand is why vouge did an all black magazine. Is it just to say that black people needed a little publicity? Why could they just have all the colors and all the nations of the world? Make it equal. All of us no matter what color, what shape, what anything, are all the same, yet individuals tend to forget that. Honestly i don't want to preach and all, or offend anyone, but when the earth was first created two people were made....Adam and Eve...and from that day forward they have made all children of diffrent color. WE all are the same! if i ripped open the skin af a white person, and ripped the skin of a black person, what would u see? The same bones, the same heart, and the same blood. Nothing would be diffrent about it, absoulutly nothing!
    Sadly we as people fail to recognize that. WHO CARES if someone wants to look like another, it's there choice, at least they appreciate what the other person looks like! It's just sad i guess....everyone can't see the beauty of all of our basically brothers and sisters, no one can see anymore that infact no matter the color....we are all the same(and that's the truth).

    The thing is though even black models are made and taught to look as white as possible. Notice how most black models have lighter skin, high cheek bones, long straight hair, tall skinny physiques. Its nice an issue like this came out, but the fact is all models are still taught and made to look as white as possible.

    That is like saying that a Chinese and a Japanese are the same because they are all Asians. The difference is not only the appearance, but culture, langage, history ect. I personally think we should not worry about looks. It is sad that we are even debating this as if women should be only showcased for their beauty. It is sad that women participate and promote such destructive ideas about women. I don't care to be held up to some stupid standard and those that are worried about that should get there prorities straight. Everyone gets old, may get sick, fat or something else and that "look" will never be in. Get real. Don't follow the fashion industry which use women and promote low self esteem within our gender. The problem is, the magazine editors dont feel the same, thus this issue, which is not to promote segregation, but to showcase in its collectivity the beauty of a race and color of women often overlooked. No one of color is saying that they have to have "our own". We have been saying and continue to say, that we want the EQUALITY to be seen just like everyone else. It is the dominant society, however that has perpetuated this continued feeling of "yours" and "ours", yet, when we acknowledge that, it is either reverse racism, or as you put it, "legalized segregation". You cant have it both ways.

    This has been long over due. I remember trying to make it as a model in London just a year ago and one of the scouts told me quite frankly that black models are hardly used on the runway, they were looking for that eastern european look, my look wasn't in.

Again, the fact that you had to educate people who never have taken the time to find out the history of our country and the history of the many races and ethnicities that our country is made up of shows that without EDUCATION and LEARNING, you are bound to be a round circle stuck in a square box. I too attended an HBCU and if you knew what you were talking about Donna you would know that this particular school (Hampton University for example) was founded by a WHITE MAN for colored students due to the rampant racism and segregation that stopped many blacks from receiving an education. Hampton also admitted and educated american indians for a time as well-you know that group of people who inhabited this land first and are now relegated to reservations? READ A BOOK!

    America and some European countries still beleive that a white women with blond hair and blue eyes, a size 0 and standing 5ft 11 is what beauty is. Black women come in all shades. From many different countries and have to work and study harder then an average white women just to get a foot in anybodys door. Its sad that we as a world don't see beauty in all cultures. I black or minority man would be quick to say that a white women is beautiful, but a white man rarely would acknowledge the beauty of a black women. Let along be seen with a black women for fear of what his white male colleages would think or say.

    I think some of you are missing the point. Although it may be true that, more caucasions are seen in print media, it's not overtly promoting it as "Caucasion Special Eddition", or some similar derivation. The fact remains, if this issue overtly stated, White is Be...., law suits would be filed before it hit the stands. This is wrong. If their is any argument at all, it should be that not enough various cultures and races are represented in media.

    I personally think that change is best. I get so tired of seeing the same faces and look (body type, stringy hair, no curves). Whoever said that being of darker skin is not beautiful. That stigma has been placed on African-American girls by white Americans since the early 1700's, which was a way for darker skin tones to feel inferior and less of a person. It was a time when white people felt that having lips and a curvy body was the worse thing in society. It kills me that the fashion industry today try to make white models look more appealing by giving them lip injection to have fuller lips why because full lips are the bomb and black women always had them. Another thing is the booty. By nature black women were giving the sexy curvy bodies but instead of the fashion industry showcasing this they try to make the european race have what black women naturally got. Why not just use the beautiful black models that is out there to showcase all this...oh I know what the problem is...the problem is that the white industry don't want to see it for what it is.. and that is.. the sistas got it going on always have and always will. If the industry hates dark skin so much stop sending your models out to get tanned and lip injections and booty implants why do european women do it...well it comes back to the same thing because darker skin look good in everything, lips are sexy, and booties are the bomb they know it that is why they want it. When it comes to discussing hair everybody's hair is made of the same thing PROTEIN if you can do one texture of hair you should be able to do the next IF you are a good stylist. Grant it black women hair does take more work but in the end it yields the same results I know I'm a hair stylist and I love doing black women hair they are my best clients and they wear it straight, in a curly afro, or in braids and it look the bomb so much can be done with their hair versus white counterparts.

    Donna - no school is "totally black". There just Historical Black Schools -HBS.. Because back then they were not able to attend the same schools or when we did attend segregated schools they were treated as outsiders.. Take it from someone who rec'd her masters at both a HBS school and a diverse school - it's not just about being "totally black"..     They have an all caucasian issue every hour, every day and every month of the year. The racism and predjudice has to stop! I get why they did it. It is a known fact that women of color are underepresented, and it just should not be especially since people of color outnumber caucasians on this planet. I applaud vogue italia's stance in bringing what some see as a "radical" concept into the mainstream, and thus bring to light an issue that has been long overlooked.

    To all of the bloggers who are not of color, please stop telling us to stop whining, and get over it. You missed the entire point of the article. No one is whining, nor do I know any black person who is looking for a handout. And if you think that is the case, it would not have to be so if your behavior of predjudice and racism was not inflicted on us. So if you believe that someone wants a "handout" as you put it, then you need to look at yourselves, or your entire race of people and realize that YOU too have a seat in the boat of blame!

    It's just plain old racism. Whites still control much of the business so they want to see themselves--not someone who challenges their sacredly held notions of beauty (i.e. someone that looks like them). While at the same time they (whites) want to immitate the very features that make black women (in this case models) stand out--full lips, curves, round buttocks, and rich skin.
