IF YOU'RE DOING IT BIG, Sen. Barack Obama thinks you could give a little more come tax time.
THE 4TH OF JULY weekend is nearly here. I don't know about you, but I have mixed emotions about this holiday.
AS MUCH AS I enjoy a good Obama-bash, I have to disagree with you on this one. Given your penchant for calling me idealistic and naïve about therealpolitik of presidential campaigns, I'm surprised that you're tripping about UnityFest 2008.

Anyone interested in an alternate take on this topic is invited to my blog on Jazz.com, entitled "Jazz's New Gold Standard: More Bull Than Bullion" (May 14, 2008): http://www.jazz.com/jazz-blog.
Thanks to Martin Johnson for a stimulating article.

For everyone that wishes to here a great jazz station internet stream go to www.krtu.org. They are an incredible public radio station in San Antonio that plays both new recordings and perennial favorites and rairities. Click on the listen live or archive section...but not for anything listed form 10pm-5am since then they switch to a free college radio format. -

Dear Martin,
I just read your article re: new golden age. It's a timely read for me as I am a member of a jazz quartet which started in the 1970's and which is now in the process of rebirth. We have played a few gigs in the past 3 years and recently performed at The Berks Jazz Festival in Reading, PA to a very appreciative audience. We have been invited back next year for two slots in their 8-9 day festival!!!!
In addition to these performances at the 2009 festival, one of the organizers is interested in a jazz cantata (narrator, choir, baritone soloist, organ, jazz quartet and visual presentation) I wrote in 1973 to be performed (tentatively) at The First Methodist Church in Reading. The first performance of this work was at Father John Gensel's church in NYC in the early 1970's.
The quartet plays both standard repertoire and original compositions. We are excited to be reforming in a serious way as pseudo-retirees, and your most interesting article only "fuels the fire".
Thanks for a great read and Compass hopes that you are right on target.
Yours in Jazz,
Tom Ives (acoustic bass) -

Martin Johnson,
You have nailed it...the "New Golden Age" will be "new!" Jazz will always pay homage to it's past and will produce based upon it's roots but it will be new fruit refleting our times.
Thanks for an insightful piece.
