SHE CROSSED the line between credible media maven and gossip girl of the week

Melissa Harris-Lacewell

THIS MORNING I am proud of my connections to North Carolina. I am an alum of Wake Forest and Duke University. My ex-husband's family (whom I still adore) are from Wilmington, NC.    My best friend teaches at NC State University. My adorable young cousin, Dani has been volunteering for Barack all over the state and sending me text messages to let me know how things are going.

CELEBRATING MOM EVEN when she's gone.

Rebecca Walker

LAST NIGHT I saw King Lear at the Globe, Shakespeare's theater on the South Bank of the Thames. I've seen the play before, but now that I'm a parent I was especially struck by the idea of love and loyalty between parent and child gone terribly wrong.

IS HILLARY REALLY ROCKY? At first, I dismissed it as yet another ridiculous attempt to paint herself as a working class underdog rather than the delusional underachiever that she's been this election season.  Upon closer examination, however, I remembered something interesting about Rocky. Although he fought to the bloody end, the stubborn pugilist lost the first time around. To whom did he lose? That's right, a cocky black guy. That's when I realized that there's probably more truth to this Rocky thing than I imagined.

Editor's Note:

The Root is about going deep, about encouraging meaningful discussion and debate around the issues, events and influences that shape us. But as much as we explore the larger forces that are defining and remaking our world, we are also grounded in exploring the more personal forces that inform and give inspiration to our lives. For Mother's Day, musician India.Arie and her mother, Simpson, sat down with The Root for an intimate mother-daughter video chat. In a series of lively, funny and honest exchanges, the two shared their cross-generational views on tradition, independence, fabulousness, and the importance of sewing, music, fearless grandmothers -- and a mom who rocks bikinis and red pumps, who will still run over and do your hair in a pinch. What a nice treat for Mother's Day. And I'm not even a mother--nor a female. I love the women bond and always seek to stay connected to their children. It's admirable. And enviable. ...I wish (Black) men were this way with their children, and especially with their sons.

This is an amazing post. Thank you, India for letting us folks on MySpace know that The Root did this with you and your mum. I hope that I have the same conversation with my daughter Eden when she is living her purpose as an adult woman. Major kudos, people. Although when you're a mum, mother's day is everyday - Happy Mother's day in honor of this fact.
