Wow, I was surprised to read at the end of the article that you're a professor of political science at the University of Chicago. I never would have guessed it. Michael, I'm a struggling uneducated white woman who doesn't have the luxury of casting my vote based on race. I have four kids that I have to feed and $10 in my pocket. Five of it I have to use to put a gallon and a half of gas in my tank and the other five is what I have left to feed the kids. I sure wish I had the luxury of being one of those racists your accusing me of being or the luxury of being a race baiter like yourself! You got it made Michael! You can afford to write articles full of nothing that distract people from educating themselves on the issues. Whether or not it's Obama, Clinton or McCain, the next president's policies won't be affecting your quality of life one way or the other. You got your degree and your job and your health insurance. You'll still be able to put gas in your car and feed your family and pay your mortgage. You can afford to write articles that provoke race riots by spinning the PA Catholic voters as racists instead of attributing their vote to Obama???s position on BAIPA. Since you don???t have to worry about your quality of life being affected, why should you worry about the quality of life of your readers? You can afford not to write about troubling issues that call into question a candidate???s character, issues like BAIPA, Rezko, Odinga and the Byrne Grant Program. Life will go on as usual for you and in four years from now you'll be able to afford to be a race baiter all over again. I'll know I've arrived when I no longer have to concern myself with the issues of the day and I get to have the same luxury as you to devalue the election process and vote like a racist if I feel like it. Until that day I have to concern myself with which candidate is going to help me give my kids a better quality of life. Right now I need to pay attention to who has the best health care program and which candidate is going to make gas cheaper. I???m especially concerned with education and the rising cost of college. My goal is to see that all of my kids get degrees so they'll have the security to vote like a racist instead of a person like me who actually has a stake in who becomes president. Thirteen years ago I was able to buy my first home despite being a single parent without a college education and in the last 4 years I've struggled to keep that home. I would love to help you realize the dream of seeing the first black man become president of the United States but I'm far too burdened right now with trying to figure out which candidate is best able to get our economy under control so that the kids and I have a better chance of keeping our home.

Hillary caused this division. She lost the nomination on super tuesday when Obama suprised everyone by putting together a coalition of upper-class, liberal whites, yung white voters and minorities, to beat Hillary's traditional democratic core. He won Iowa, tied in New Hampshire (Hillary cried before the voting and the elderly white voted for her), then went on to win 11 straight contest. After that, any other nominee would have dropped out, but not Hillary. She had Bill play the race-baiting card, and now the party is very damaged.

I'm a little dissapointed by some of these comments. This is the type of cynisism that you see amongst black people and white people. Barak's bitter comment can definitely be applied to black folks as well. We hug on to religion, guns, and bullsh*t too! It is clear based on the numbers that Hilary can't win the popular votes, states won, and delegate count. 50% of her supporters state they won't vote for Barack if he's the nominee. How many of Barak's supporters especially the 90% of the black vote will vote for Hillary if she's pulls the rug from under all of us. I say that's more of a 60-75% number! So guess what? She won't be able to beat McCain either! Understand something blacks favored BILL CLINTON! Which she is not! I won't for her and I'll probably won't vote for McCain! What a great opportunity for the Democrats to F-up again, disenfranchising young and black voters. Classic Democratic Bull Sh*t!

Just a thought exercise: What happens if the nomination goes to Clinton. How should McCain respond to win? What are the chances he would run with a black VP on the ticket? A conservative would help to fill out his credentials, or maybe even he could convince Powell to come out of retirement. How screwed are the democrats then?

This would be a worst case scenario and one I doubt will ever happen. This is Barack's nomination. Stealing this and awarding it to Clinton, in a coup de tat, would ignite a nuclear bomb, because Black people would explode! This country would be worse than it was when it had its first Civil War. This would be the 2nd Civil War, if that unlikely scenario unfolded.

Everyone knows that the Clinton camp is pushing the race issue onto Obama. Obam entered this race as a "benign" black person, a man who for all practical purposes is "Black" by choice. Culturally, Obama is just as "white" as Clinton--raised by white mother and white gtrandparents, Harvard graduate with honors, voluntarily entered the "black world" as an adult. Other pluses, married and appears faithful to his wife, attends church regularly. You'd think he would be a surefire winner and positive candidate. Hold on, instead, he has been turned into a liar("stolen" words), bumbling idiot, black power advocate with a crazy preacher and a crazy white terrorist as friends, "elitist", yet he's the least wealthy of the three candidates. Now, if this intelligent, light skinned, family man cannot win over old, white, high school graduates that chew tobacco and go duck hunting---what do you think would happen to a dark skin brother?

What's with all the negativity on this thread? Everything is fine. Obama will win the nomination and the election. He has planned this campaign down to the last detail, with the best possible people working with him. He is an excellent organizer, a phenomenal speaker, and has the true grace which transforms attacks into opportunities for healing and understanding.

Nobody ever said it would be easy. He's up against entrenched polarization, apathy, laziness of thought and long-term habits of powerlessness. This election cycle is analogous to national therapy; we are being challenged to quit our dysfunctional habits and forge a healthier way of relating, to each other and to the rest of the world. It was bound to be long, and it was bound to be painful. Therapy always is.

In fact, this long primary campaign is bound to help Obama win the general election, by getting him into every state, working for every vote. The more people see of him, the more they like him; the reverse is true of Hillary. And McCain is a nice man, but not terribly bright, and comes off as unstable. Obama can handle them both. Don't give up on him; he'll never give up on us.

He thinks he is so much better than everyone else in this country--especially those NOT in the upper economic class. This is the fact whether it is called elitist or not. 2. He has NO plan(s) to implement because he hasn't thought that far ahead. 3. He obviously is NOT a staunch American because he sat and listened to Rev. Wright year after year after year and did not object to the hatemongering in that church. Sure he knew what was being said week after week. 4. His wife, Michelle, looks down her nose at the rest of us even more so than does Mr. O. She also has no allegiance toward America -- after all, she was never proud of this country until Barack became a candidate for the presidency. 5. By affliating with Oprah he is letting that woman buy him the nomination. So, it's Mr. and Mrs. O we are contending with. (I loved Oprah until she did that.) 6. Mr. O whines too much. Racist?? NOT !! I want to be able to elect someone who is READY to lead our country and to lead it back to the prosperity we enjoyed during the tenure of her husband. Vote for Hillary !!!

If you're focused on race then you are a racist.

If "black voters" are to be disappointed (if) Obama does not get the nomination it will clearly show that being Democrat is second to being Black - which is to say that Blacks are racist. It will also indicate that his supporters are more focused on electing a Black and less interested in electing a Leader. (And personally I think it already shows that "black supporters" want a Marxist leader like every third world African nation. If they were not racist they would gladly let the process deliver their Democrat candidate and be focused on issues - not skin color.

And where is the article citing that women will be disappointed if Clinton is not nominated? Again, the focus is on race . . . for a Liberal cause. Where was the black support for Clarence Thomas? Supporting a black didn't seem to matter when it was for a conservative. Obviously this voter block is focused on getting a Black, Liberal, "gimme yo money" politician - which violates every principle upon which this country was founded.

If Clinton wins the popular vote will Democrats , of all colors, then repeat the clamor used to support Gore's assertion that he won based on popular vote/disregard the delegates? If Clinton is nominated will the Democrats cry that she was "slected not elected" and continue for years the hateful rhetoric toward their own party?

Either way it plays out, the true colors of the Democrat party will come shining through. It's not about substance. It's about social engineering and pandering to groups. It clearly shows that Democrats, on the whole, view people through prejudiced eyes (i.e., race, gender, ethnicity, income level, etc.). No matter how it turns out the Democratic party is going to implode.

Shouldn't the articles being written be about a candidates position on issues? If it's all about race, and Obama gets elected, what is he going to do his first day, say "ok, mission accomplished"?

And I'll go forward on this - if Obama did get elected and an assasination attempt was made how would blacks react? Would they be as calm as whites when Kennedy or Reagan were shot? Oh the hipocrisy of Democrat racists . . .

Of course, if you really don't like it, then move to Liberia.

I just don't understand the logic behind the idea that Obama has gotten where he is because he is black. When this race started the popular thinking was that he didn't stand a snowball's chance in hell of defeating " the inevitable" Hillary Clinton. The work that this man has done to close the gap, and then pass her as the front runner is nothing short of amazing. Regardless of what you think of the guy you gotta give it to him. He's good. Very good. To say it's "just because he's black" discounts the amazing yet flawed campaign he's run against a juggernaut like Hillary. Lets turn it around. If her were white... the nomination would be locked up. If he were white, I believe the general public (who are easily mesmerized by a pretty face) would look past his inexperience and anoint him as the second coming of Robert Kennedy. But, alas, he is not white. Which means it is his color and color alone (okay, maybe the middle name too) that arouses suspicion in those who would normally drink the Kool-aid.

They'd much rather forgive and forget their past hate, in fact, they rather choose her they have a good, decent black man in the white house. This whitely made country that was stolen from brown skins people many eons ago aways behave with a level of entitlement. It's no wonder that Hillary Clinton keeps moving the gold post every time. It's the same feeling of entitlement. The has more right to the white house she feels than another person born and bred american of another race. God figure.

This election will not be about a black presidential candidate being wronged. Isn't he half white? A half clearly forgotten. It is his terribly liberal record, not his skin color, that makes Obama unelectable in the Fall. The superdelegates know this. Hillary is far too liberal for the fall election as well. As for McCain being a right-wing extremist. Well, that just drips with ignorance from a liberal polital science teacher from Chigaco. I wish McCain were far more conservative than he is. However, Republicans can unite on one thing: He is far more electable than the other two. Get ready for four more years of the Grand Old Party!

Since when does "money raised" equate to the best nominee? Isn't that why Barack Obama supported Campaign Finance Reform? An issue he now wants to ignore.

Your opening that this is what is supposed to happen is correct. The fact remains: NEITHER Barack Obama NOR Hillary Clinton will have enough votes to carry the nomination. I repeat: BARACK OBAMA DOES NOT HAVE ENOUGH VOTES TO CARRY THE NOMINATION.

For some reason this gets lost in all of these discussions. Popular vote, number of delegates, etc... it's all MUTE. Since there is a threshold that has not been met. Claiming victory when you are on the 5-yard line would have changed the result of many Super Bowls. And that is exactly what the Obama Campaign is trying to do, and the media is playing along with this notion. He has not reached the goal yet!

The party rules are specifically designed to have this process take the entire time up to the convention, with a vote at the convention. IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE HIS WAY!

If neither candidate has the votes from the Pledged and Super Delegates on the First Vote. Then the Pledge Delegates are not longer bound to vote for that candidate! It's entirely ignorant to claim victory before the Convention.

He thinks our national anthem should be changed and refuses to wear an American flag pin because it offends some people. He calls himself a Christian but the fact remains he was raised Muslim and abandoned his faith to gain votes. Imagine what he will do to the American people. He is a good public speaker and like most politicians he is promising more than he can deliver and he knows this. He talks about how good he will be for the country but what has he done as Senator? He lacks experience and is counting on the "affirmative action" route to the White House. It will be a sad day for American if he is elected. Agree with migentenegra. I'm a life long member of the Democratic party. However, that will change big time if some deal is cut for Hillary Clinton to be the party nominee in the fall. For too long, black voters have been taken for granted by the Democratic party. The Democras are having their racial comeuppance. The ugly tone by which Bill and Hillary Clinton are campaigning, their self-serving eagerness to exploit bigotry to win at all costs and their dynastic entitlement issues have turned me off. How ironic it is that HIllary would never be a member of Rev. Wright's church, yet it is that church and other black churches like mine that Bill Clinton used to show up in every Sunday morning during the 1992 election season "feeling our pain" and clamoring for black votes. These are the votes the Democrats counted on to win when Bill and other white candidates couldn't get the votes of the "bitter" lower class whites in PA, OH, MI. Now HIllary panders to that group. well let them have her. Howard Dean is an idiot. If Ron Brown had lived, he would have had the foresight to realize the true impact of a decision to cut out FL and MI. Black people, please consider all options and don't put all your faith in one party.

Basically, if you are making the argument that the "popular" vote determines it... well, Dear Democrats, you are letting a lot of Republicans decide a nominee. The problems is the Democrats primary.... unfortunately, they didn't change it when it could have made a difference. And, so, whether it is the black community or the women who are angry.. they shouldn't allow it to taint what is a monumental time in politics. As a woman, if a Black man is President, I still feel better at night with the headway. My question is whether some in the black community can be as magnanimous and do the same if it's a woman?

He is a politician who when faced with difficult votes on the STATE level voted present 130 times instead of having the backbone to vote yes or no which is allowed in the notorious Illinois political system but begs the question of what will be his actions during difficult times in the White House you can???t vote present as President of The United States

He hides a racist belief system behind a unity pretense (read his comments about bitter small town people clinging to guns and religion as a racist swipe at white Americans)

He scorns Clinton and McCain for their votes on the authorization for the invasion of Iraq without mentioning he was not in the senate to tally a vote (he also purposely leaves out the fact that the vote was for a last resort solution and The Idiot Bush lied about a promise not to go adventuring with the American army and the intelligence given to the voting members of the legislative branch of the federal government was cherry picked by The Demon Cheney)

It was my concern in January that the main stream media (MSM) had effectively split the Democratic Party between a black man and a woman (both historical candidates). Whoever the candidate is, the extremely disappointed supporters of the losing candidate will not come out in full support and a lot of them will simply sit out the election thus handing the election to McCain. But more research on the subject turns out a different conclusion. Obama has the vote of young people. Young people are unreliable and do not vote in national elections. Obama has the support of the black community. Blacks do not vote in a national election. If Obama secures the nomination, McCain will be the next president. If Clinton wins the nomination, the black and young vote will not matter anyway and the democrats will win the election.

I cannot vote for Hillary after all the lies and division her campaign has caused. If you go to the PA Secretary of State site, the margin of victory Tuesday was 9.2% (54.6 - 45.4). So, instead of rounding down as every American was taught in grade school, the media and the Clinton campaign rounded up to 10%.
    http://www.electionreturns.state.pa.us/

Then you throw in the latest garbage about how Hillary has won more votes than Obama by using MI and FL and you have to say that the Clintons will do anything to win, lie, cheat and steal the election if that's what it takes. These types of tactic are exactly what Obama is trying to change and if we Americans and democrats do see it, then we're doomed for 8 more years of Clinton crap, scandal, etc. in the White House.

One commenter suggests that Obama should not be the nominee because of white folks who won't vote for him in the general election. As a white guy, I find that suggestion appalling. What is the point of being a Democrat isf they stand for nothing besides winning. It is that mentality that is driving Clinton's campaign and, incidentall, destroying the party. Instead of worrying about how a bunch of racist crackers vote, the Democratic party should unify behind the presumptive nominee and stop playing idiotic and, frankly, racist games. A lot of us are going to leave the party if this election is stolen--either within the party or as a result of Democrats kneecapping Obama in the general. Like him or not, Obama is the winning Democrat. I don't want McCain to be president. But I cannot support a manipulative and racist Democratic campaign.

Actually, many blacks love to hear this kind of thing (that the election may be 'stolen' from them), and here's why: outrage. Outrage is the single biggest and most profitable entity in the black community. It's also the most destructive. What do you want to hear? That my heart surgeon is black? That my dentist is black? The my attorney is black? Well, guess what? All three are. But that's not good for the Rev. Wrights and the Obamas of the world. What is good, what gets them THEIR house in the safe white neighborhood is the outrage of the average black man. Jesse Jackson and Sharpton were more transparent, but Obama, and his wife, who never paid a dime (because of race) to go to, and to work at, some of the most prestigous universities on the planet, now play the race card (and exploit the current, ignorant-but-well-meaning liberal white fascination with all things black) for their millions--or wasn't the tens of millions Barack earned in the last five years enough opportunity for him? This is such a tough country in which to thrive, that boatloads of Asians who can't even speak the language are offloading as we speak. Their children will all be doctors in as little as one generation. The horrible truth is, that the last two secratary of states have been black. The front runner for the presidency for most of this election is black (and entirely unworthy and unqualified for that office). But let's be honest: many blacks don't want B. Hussein Obama to win. No way. If he wins, the race card and the extortion that comes with it becomes that much harder to claim the next time around. A cold day in hell before a black is president? Please. Get the felonious half of the 5% of black males who make up the total U.S. population to fly straight, and you may have your black president. Hell, you may have it this year. But I can't help but wonder, then what will you complain about?

If Senator Obama wins the nomination, his grassroots organization will help him win the election. I support him strongly (white middle-class woman that I am). If somehow Senator Clinton wins the popular vote, beats Senator Obama in the rest of the states, and is awarded the nomination by the superdelegates (huge "ifs," of course), I will be very disappointed but will vote for her in the fall.

I won't contribute to her campaign, though, as I have to Senator Obama several times. The only way I would not vote for her (I will NEVER vote for McCain) is if the superdelegates backed her crazy arguments, like counting Florida and Michigan (she won Michigan for the same reason Stalin and Mao won their elections--only name on the ballot), and if she didn't win the popular vote or pledged delegates. Under those circumstances, I would feel deeply betrayed by the Democratic Party. I am withholding my modest contribution from the Democratic Party even now because I'm not sure they will play fair with Senator Obama. If he is nominated, I'll contribute to both him and the Democratic Party. Right now I only contribute to his campaign.

Superdelegates were created 25 years ago by the Democratic party elite to act as a emergency break during the Democratic nomination process. The process is structured in a way that a candidate can capture a majority of the delegates for the convention, yet not be a strong enough candidate for the Democrats in the general elections. Technically, the primary/caucus process can yield a nominee that is out-of-touch with the Democratic base and with potential cross-over voters.

I imagine there would be cries of "Give the man a chance." Because, point in fact, there are no landslide vistories. NOT for Obama and NOT for Hillary.

I am just so sick and tired of watching two otherwise wonderful people gnaw each other's arms as we limp into the convention. How can either one of them fend off Republican attacks when they have so effectively debilitated each other?

Of course race and gender are issues, but no one talks about the REAL racial issue: how many people will vote for McCain simply because he is white and male.
All the talk focuses on black people voting for a candidate who has faced more of the same challenges they have and women voting for a person who understands what it means to try to be both a successful professional and a woman/mother.

Why is there so little real attention paid to the much larger percentage of people who vote race and gender -- white men? It is the unstated theme whenever Senator Obama or Senator Clinton is called "unelectable."

It is so sad that a random Democrat can poll better than either of the candidates we actually have running.

    So help me with this:

Which "people" are being shut our in those nefarious ???smoke-filled rooms???? How do you count those who "voted" in caucuses? What about those (like me) who will be writing John Edwards' name in on their ballots? If Hillary catches up and surpasses Barak in the total popular vote (however you count it) but remains behind in delegates, have "the people" spoken?

What about Hillary and Barak supporters who are suffering from buyers remorse in June? Shouldn't superdelegates consider this factor in their "vote with the people" decisions? And I won't even bring up "the people" in the insignificant states of Michigan and Florida.

Do the Democrats want to win in 2008? If they do, Howard Dean, DNC gray beards (to be chosen by each camp), and Obama and Clinton should sit down together now. They should establish tight rules on how the campaign should proceed. At least seven points should be agreed to:

    1. candidates should be encouraged to let the campaign play out to the last primary,

    2. Michigan and Florida will be required to abide by the party rules already in place,

    3. both candidates will agree to run the final primaries against McCain, not each other,

    4. the superdelegates will be the deciding force should neither candidate gain enough delegates through the primary process,

    5. both candidates, should they prevail, agree to offer the vice-presidency to the other candidate to accept or turn down,

    6. the terms of this agreement will be made fully public as the means used to enforce its terms.

    7. should either Clinton or Obama refuse the terms offered, the DNC should publicize this refusal as an act that puts victory over McCain and the Republicans in great jeopardy

It is ironic that African Americans, the most loyal voters in the Democratic party, get saddled with the label of ???racist??? for supporting a candidate that brings a message of hope to all people.

I???d like to remind people that when Reagan Democrats, white blue collar voters, went for the GOP, African Americans stuck by our candidate, Jimmy Carter, no matter what. He never defamed us, or insulted our intellegence, but, as a southerner, showed empathy with our plight.

Furthermore, many voting records will show that African Americans have always suported the white Democratic candidate over the perceived callousness of the Republican partty.

So when a qualified candidate of bi-racial background shows that he can actually run for the highest office in the land, and that other white people would also support him (note Obama???s win in Iowa),of course we get excited. Our hearts are moved to action as we thought we were getting a candidate whome everyone could get behind.

But now, we are called racist by the very party that we have given our blood to. Now all the secret ugliness of hidden racism has now surfaced aided by the Clintons. Those that delude themselves into believing that Obama played the race card are pitiful.

It is clearly evident how the Democratic party feels toward African Americans: our votes are needed but we are not.

I too have a large number of Republicans friends who happen to be African American. They have a ???I told you so??? smirk on thier faces. They saw this comming.

Why are African Americans so blindly supporting a party that clearly does not honor us beyond our vote? Clinton is willing to stroke the fires of racsim in order to win the nomination. I say give it to her! Let her have it! She can take the nomination and her party straight to defeat in November.

It is time for African Americans to examine all of our party options!
