Michelle Plays it Straight, Safe

She survives Colbert.

Michelle Obama appearing on the Colbert Report Tuesday night.

Cable viewers got Obamas everywhere they clicked Tuesday night. While Barack worked out his jumpshot and other issues with Bryant Gumbel on HBO's Real Sports, Michelle played Jackie O in waiting with Comedy Central's Stephen Colbert, whose show, The Colbert Report is in Philadelphia all week.

Light on the funny, and heavy on the talking points, Mrs. Obama made one thing very clear -- "I'm willing to make the sacrifices to get him in office." Crazed cable commentator be damned.

Sure, Michelle joked.. Colbert, playing up the ongoing "elitist" controversy spawned by Barack's clumsy comments about "bitter" working-class voters, opened the segment by asking her how many silver spoons she grew up with in her mouth.

"Four," Michelle deadpanned with little more than a blink. "Then my father got a raise at the plant and we had five spoons." Score one for Michelle for slipping in "the plant reference."

She played nicely with Stephen. Heck, she even flirted a bit. But, she was a woman (the "Obama Woman" as the show tagged her) with not just a mission but a message -- "Umm, vote for my husband, and BTW we're not snobs."

"He's going to change the face of this country. I know that," declared Michelle, before adding that the senator would ensure "regular folks get a fair shake."

Yeah, yeah, more regular folks.

Host Stephen -- playing his usual 'roid raged version of Bill O'Reilly -- rarely let's his "guests" get a word in and he baited Mrs. O at every turn with. "Everybody knows that you and your husband are elitists,," he jumped in with as a hello. But she held her ground.

Sitting in the Green Room, she had ample chance to get a taste of what was coming. Colbert's opening segment played heavily on Obama's "bitter" gaffe. (critics call it elitist. we'll just call it bougie) In his nightly segment The Word,, Colbert picked "tradition" noting that Barack was part of a established ritural of condescension on the campaign trail.

"That gives voters like me a sense that the candidates are just like me," added Colbert, hardly containing the sarcastic smile creeping across his lips.

With her turn bat Michelle played by the rules mostly.

Flirting just so slightly with Colbert, she mentioned Barack's jealousy and superior singing voice while playing Jackie O in a shiny, sleeveless blue cocktail dress and endless bare legs.

"You're a very good looking lady," Colbert said, seeming nearly out of character..

Her appearances on primetime have been rare. Last May she appeared on "Good Morning America" and "NBC Nightly News" with both programs tagging her as "the strong black woman" -- an appellation she relishes rather than rejects.

Last month's New Yorker profile of Obama said that "her pride visibly chafes at being asked to subsume her personality, to make herself seem duller and less independent than she is, even in the service of getting her husband elected President of the United States."

I do not think that Mrs. Michelle Obama is "playing it safe or straight." She is being herself. Mean-spirited persons have taken a few of her comments out of context, distorted them, and porterayed her as a bitter, less than patriotic American. She is kind, very patriotic, and quite down to earth. I admire her and her accomplishments. Also, I admire Cindy Mc Cain, and Senator Hillary Clinton. Women should not be penalized for being strong. Michelle should not be penalized for working hard, going to school and obtaining a degree.

I didn't find the article snide, just journalistic cynicism. Mrs. Obama has made it quite clear she does not want to be co-president. She knows how much she can achieve for everyone as first lady. Go Michelle, with your endless legs and beauty!

I love Michelle Obama. I haven't voted for her hubby *yet*. But I did notice that Alice Walker is not bitching about Michelle Obama not using her last name. It seems that Walker said that Clinton should use Rodham rather than Clinton, and all the while Walker swore her decisions on whom to elect president are not race based. What a liberal and unforgivable liar. It's too bad The Root printed it.
