what a great article. and thank you for including the picture. it actually brought tears to my eyes to think of what a beautiful, miraculous country Amreican can sometimes be, but how the culture and soul has been lost in the political interests and miseducation of the people. i was listening to a woody guthrie song as i read your article, and i got very nostalgic. though i'm 25 and first generation afghan-american, i can really sense the rich culture america has that is clearly evident in the music created through the decades. thanks again.

Good to see Jack White's name again. I haven't seen him since BET used to have that political talk show moderated by Ed Gordon.

Damn! Eldridge Cleaver! That goes way back.

I remember reading his book "Soul on Ice" where he talked about how he loved to rape white girls to get back at America -- rape 'em just because of the color of their skin. Hot damn!

Be sure and read that part to your sweet young daughter so she knows what her daddy looks for in a President.

sweet -- made me nostalgic. mr. white captures what makes this presidential process so much more riviting for every generation today. and what makes the democratic contest the litmus test for america in terms of our readiness for change, our ability to elevate the dialog and move forward in mutual (if even tentative) trust of each other, to not only seek change, but effect it.

I envy White and his daughter. I am a cusp-generation X'er and I have never voted FOR a presidential candiate. I don't forsee a time that I ever will. I will be casting the same vote I always have. A vote of civic responsibility. I vote because people died so that I could. But I have never been inspired by a presidential candidate...and I'm still not.

Well Mr. Wright even though this time you'll be voting for Obama, you will still in essence be voting against Nixon in the form of Clinton or McCain.

I am envious that I wasn't able to be a part of the hardest times in African American history, but I will be a part of history that moves America to the place it said it would be.

Thanks for all the thoughtful comments about the story. To answer the question posed by soWaco Sistah: none of the candidates she mentions won their party's nomination. None of them had a realistic chance of becoming President, so I would classify voting from them as a protest vote.

It's wonderful to read of White's relationshipe with his daughter and that they are excited to vote for Barack Obama. . I'm curious , where was he when he had the opportunity to vote for Shirley Chisolm , Rev. Jesse Jackson (twice) and Rev Al Sharpton.
I'm an African American Baby Boomer from the writer's generation who voted in Texas' primary. My friends and I support Hillary Clinton for the same reasons he supports Obama- we believe she represents our values, understands our needs and can form and lead a government responsive to those needs. Is this a great country or wha?.

Thank you for giving such a positive remembrance. Back when you first voted i was 18; however they did not give the vote to 18 year olds, who were being drafted, until the 1972 election cycle. Since ???72 my voting logic has been the same as yours, except for that moment in 1992 when i thought i was voting for the plank in the Democratic platform which advocated DC statehood.
The Dems won, but did not follow through on the promise that would give them two new senators and a congressman. Pity.

I live and vote through absentee ballot in South Africa now.
And i know overseas ballots only really get counted if the race is close; however it is going to feel so very good to once in my electoral life to vote for a candidate i have faith in and actually believe.
The real bonus, thanks to President Elect Obama, will be my being able to go to the corner store in my Cape Town neighborhood and be free of Bush jokes.

I read this article and laughed, flashed back in time and said "amen". I agree with him 100% as this will be the first time I will vote for a candidate of my choice as opposed to the lesser of two evils. This will be the first time in my 35 years of voting I will be voting "for" a candidate I belive will represent my values, my beliefs, and will form a government I can accept. I think God each day that I have lived to see this time and envy the generations who will have the opportunity to vote now and they years to come "for" candidates as opposed to "in spite of, against, or better than."

A very touching post. I too am part of your generation, though I would never have voted for Eldridge Cleaver, an admitted rapist. I am proud of Barack Obama's accomplishments and am moved whenever I see him speak. However, the biggest change I see is that my children can now feel free to vote for whomever they choose. We don't really have to have an African American in office to believe "that the problems we face can really be solved if we buckle down and pull together--that the process really works".

I wish Obama the best, but I am supporting Hillary Clinton in this election.

The voice of Richard Crenna as the opening theme of Slattery's People plays in the background comes to mind as I read this story: "Democracy is a very bad form of Government, but I ask you to never to forget it, all the others are far worse".

For, if one were to substitute the above with "My choice is a very bad example of a candidate, but I'll vote for him/her, nonetheless, for all the others are far worse", one would get the real insight into why most people vote the way they do.

Or, as we say in Trinidad and Tobago, "The people never vote for, they always vote against!"

    Sigh!
