I think the world should honor Martin Luther King. One thing we always exclude is Martin Luther King saved white men and woman from violence also, I believe a man that can save a white man, and a white woman from theirselves is a great man indeed. Martin Luther King has saved all black people from reincornating into slavery. He has also made the white man realize some of his demond's. So that they can free themselves from evil. Of Doing the devils work. I strongly feel that whites should be celebrating Martin Luther King as well because he saved them from theirselves. I am forever black and Martin Luther King is forever my leader. I think Martin Luther King's face should be on all Money Currency, because he done a job that the president of the United States could not even do. And that's free all people black and white were we can live in a more peaceful Country. AS -

I am a black female with an unspeakable amount of respect for MLK. When I hear his voice I have chills. I keep Dr. King, his and the efforts of other civil rights leaders in the back of my head when I represent myself on my job, how I raise my children, how I handle and carry myself and especially how I treat my fellow black white asian latino indian fellow men. I always, always remember that I am representing a very resilient, strong, powerful race of people as defined by our ancestors. Has some of our younger generation caused issues that would dissapoint Dr. King? Yes, but they are a mere portion or an entire history of people and do not represent the whole. This is why I focus on the strong Blacks from time ago and their perserverence. I challenge all Blacks to "keep Dr. King and the efforts of other civil rights leaders in the black of YOUR mind" as you live your life. He provided an excellent example of Godliness, peace, strength and courage that we can all utilize during our everyday lives. I feel so indebted by this what this day represents. You should, also, carry this feeling with you daily as a badge of "honor". -

it is in todays earth that we each must remind ourselves and than others alike and different of our responsibiliity to those who look like us and the many who look different that we each owe eachother the benefit that life (GOD) has served us with and that is a LOVE that keeps on giving and finds in it's giving the heart to continue giving recognizing that we can never give enough and yet in order to do this we must first each forgive ourselves that we have been selfish, that we have been racist, that we have been anything and everything other than what we are needed to be as well as called by GOD to be and that, this is freely giving. Will you , I , we forgive one another, love one another as we would love ourselves if we truly knew how to LOVE and give not until it hurts but until we see every under privelidged man, woman and child get to a place we can call them us, you, me , we the privileged. A man, as anyother seeking to be the TRUTH. C.Lewis Ritvalsky -

I guess I wasn't registered, so here goes again. I agree that Honoring Dr King is not enough. He would have not wanted that. He would have not settled for anything less that ALL humanbeings being treated with true equality and concern. - not just one race, ethinc group, etc. Consider, for example, the Souix Indian people of the Norther Plains of our Great Country. And many more. People of ALL catigories need equal concern and conseration. Anything less would never have been acceptable to Dr King. He was a great visionary, in my mind. (I am white). Think of ANY category or group of people and you will find those who are overlooked or forgotten. Nothing short of respecting and caring for every humanbeing should be acceptable. Dr King would have not had it any other way. bk -

My name is Annie; I look at my people, I want to cry. Mothers are alone, can hardly take care of her house; we work but can't seem to get ahead. We as a people seem to be going backward. Our ancstors fought so hard for things to be better for us. Martin had that power in his speech, our leaders don't seem to be able to speak with authority. My father was a committed man in the movement. Why do you think our history is not taught in schools? If we don't know that we come from Kings and Queens, we think we are what they say we are; two third human, just nothing. My husband worked in the movement also, He is dead now but he was a strong man. I taught my children some of their history, now I am teaching my grandchildren. We need to teach our children, don't leave it up to someone else to teach our children.
Please Black Americans; don't let them put us against each other!

I agree; Honoring King isNot Enough. He called for equality for ALL people. That means; not just one race, or one regligion, ethnic group, etc. He did not confine his concern for just (any) one group of people, but for ALL people. We seem to forget that. There are many people in our country that are overlooked for whatever reason. Did you know that the poorest, most opressed people in our country live of Indain reservations, especially the Souix in the Dakotas. Who ever bothers to be concerned about them. Everyone on this planet should be considered equal in true value. Yes, definitely consider the people stuck in crime and drug areas. But, please don't stop there. People of ALL races, ethinc groups, etc have members in great need. Dr King would never have been satisfied to alleviate the woe of one group only. He would only have been satisfied when everyone is loved, cared for, and considered as equals. BK -

blah blah blah. this honoring king with rapping, sports and expecting equivalency test and high school tests to be lowered for blacks inferior intelligence is what blacks should be concerned with. the opportunities are out there for blacks to better themselves and better their communities. they just choose the easier ways out and blame whites for their short comings, ahh how convenient. if they want to keep this so called "dream" alive, then study, work hard and earn it. also, quit blaming whites. most of whom are the working middle-class. we work hard, earn what is ours and do NOT have any hand in the hardships of blacks today. blacks today were never enslaved and whites of the past several generations have never owned slaves. so quit your whining about king and the injustices of blacks today and get your lazy butts in gear. -

Mrs. Edelman, thank you so much for your words of wisdom and your works. Our country surely is still in a mess. African Americans have made progress but it's sad that we have such a long way to go. The community I live in there is no progress that I see for my people of color. It's still so far behind the white people. There is nothing for young black boys and black girls to do other than walk the streets and be harassed by white cops. There have been murders of people I know and nothing or no one trying to figure out who or why. It breaks my heart. I don't have the resources to fight like I would lie to and wish I could make a different in others lives. Thank you and God bless -

This is a lovely article, however, King followed Jesus Christ. It was God that used King to bring equality and point out the political hypocracy that threatened the black culture and its future in this country. KIng pointed out the misuse and abuse of church leaders who kept their churches in isolation rather than reaching out. However , being a follower of Christ I find that racism does not exist in the Body of Christ. In America no one is immune to materialism and boastful arrogant free speech slandering as well as isolationism. It is not that we haven't gotten to that promised land , it is that you cannot have sinful selfish desires co exist with peace . We are all sinners without the forgiveness of the cross. The "Promised Land" of the Bible , the one King spoke of , is in essence at work in the Body of Christ today and every moment while living during the " flesh" . The congregation attend feeds the homeless , hangs with the homeless, builds homes for anyone who needs them "anyone." All the black kids in my city or church are some of the hippest trend setters and as popular as anyone. I think everyone should judge by actions not appearances, there are a lot of street smart games going on, these things cannot be legislated by government , you cannot stop hate if it starts in the heart, the same is true with sin. I find that anyone of any race when they learn the forgiveness God has waiting for them and the way God loves them and they seek more of Christ and follow Christ aware He was God in the flesh, they then become loving to anyone , and give everyone an equal chance to be friends with , to help, to build relationship, to do business with, etc. . But people are differnent and live differently, many do not even abide by the laws of the nation and we have to learn to adapt to that. But the only reason KIng had a point and a power was because of Jesus Christ, and the promised land , the real promised land , is not of this world and it knows of no geography. King would agree and give all the glory to Christ. ONce anyone knows Christ and knows He was God and is risen and alive , they change forever , and there are many things worth fighting for, even King would admit that his battles had nothing to do with accepting sin in our culture and rebellion against the United States. And the only way anyone can justify judgement and equality and peace is if God exists, so when people say "who are you to judge?" without God why would judgement even be wrong. So if you follow MLK I hope you realise he followed Jesus Christ. MLK is meaningless without Christ and without God. -

The underlying sentiment in this essay is that it is hate or racism or some other invisible force that keeps (some) blacks from achieving the American dream. I have news. The reason there are 15 times more black men in prison than college is that they don't attend college and they commit crime.
It is time for black people to take responsibility for their situation. The refusal to stop illegimatacy and inability to get educated, get out of bed every day, go to work and save money like the rest of us is the reason for their failure.
The days when white people who have nothing wrong feel guilty about the blacks' poverty are over. Heal yourselves! -

What right do poor people have to give birth to children and then hand the bill to me? Why are we not having a conversation about contraception? Why are we not having a conversation about the ~ 70% of black children born out of wedloclk? Why are we not having a conversation about the thousands of black men that have children and then do nothing to support them?
MLK was right about ending racism!
MLK was wrong about the cure for poverty! -

We do not do enough to lift our people out of poverty is a load of crap! There are so many programs offered by the government and other agencies that there is no reason anyone should remain on the welfare system. Free Education, Free Healthcare, Free Food. How much more money do you want hard working tax payers to shell out so the so called underprivileged can stay on welfare have more children and collect more money. The problem with our society is that people are lazy; they would rather those that have taken care of those that don't feel like having. It is understandable that certain conditions arise that cause people hardship and they end up in need of assistance. That assistance should only be temporary and the people that live on it should have to live to a higher standard. If you can not support yourself and you are looking for handouts then you need to answer to the people who are handing it to you. We don't owe you anything. You are not entitled to anything you do not work for. If all the energy spent complaining about what people don't have and why they should be entitled was spent on earning a living and raising their family then the unemployment rate would be down, scores in school would be up and the crime rate would be lowered. It is time for Americans to take a look at themselves and see what they can do for themselves before freely sticking their hands out and expecting them to be filled. It is time to start slapping those hands down and making people more accountable for their actions. -

Please don't ever stop remembering and reminding our youth about Dr. King. I teach middle school, and I am ashamed to hear little White children referring to Black children as "Niggas", and when the adults try to talk to them about the word they defend using it. Even the Black kids defend the White kids using it, but later there is a fight between a Black kid and a White kid because the White kid called the Black kid "***", This word should be deemed a crime to use because people are still getting hurt and even killed over it! -

Poor people are going thru hell. And the ones with power keep giving us their standard rationalization such as: these people do not want to work. As long as the corporative world needs to have at least 3% of workers unemployed to have a free flowing system then some people are victims of the economy and not because they choose not to work. -

Powerful article i appreciate the fact you still notice the profound importance of empowering our youth who will benefit us as a nation in the long run.I also agree with you wholeheartedly about us being a moraless society with little or no conscience towards those less fortunate than us?? What nation would consider themselves so rich and properous when the numbers and statistics suggest otherwise??? How can the majority of African American claim to be Christians, followers of Christ belonging to a multi billion dollar organization that hasnt used its economic/social power to change the social ills that still haunt us such as starving children..homelessness,millions below poverty, crackheads, dopefiens,ex cons, the mentally challenged, disabled veterans, miseducated adults and youths, umemployed, welfare families ,just to name a few..we have more work to do since KINGS day because the bar has been raise,we are on a worldwide level now and this lack of evolution is threatening our very existence..please let us wake up -

I was 4 when Mr. King was assasinated and cannot recall any story told to me from a family member of what had happened to him or why he was so important. I am 44 years old now and through the years have learned through both the written and spoken word that he was a man that fought so hard for equality for everyone . Some steps have been taken towards this goal BUT still there is a lot work to do. Mr. King and those who fought along side him have inspired me to the point where I can no longer sit on the sidelines and see God's children live in an unjust country. With God's help I will do my part and join others in the struggle for equality for everyone in my community. AND I challenge you to do the same. -

After 40+ years ya still don't get it! I was 11 years old in 1968, oh, and I happen to be of European descent.
What is absolutely surprising is how no credit is given at all to white people for changing! Lets face it, what MLK did was change the discussion from between black, to between blacks and whites! And they listened. How appaled I was when I found out a white guy shot King!!
But, when almost every black person interviewed at the time said "they shot Martin" one had to wonder "who are they?" Oh yeah, the riots,,,,"we'll forget about those for awhile!!
So here we are 40 years into this, and ya still don't get it! For my point, I've been rolled, jumped, robbed and beaten 8 times in my life, and each and every time,,,,"yup,," a black guy. Trust me, I'm sure there are good black guys that grew up in a city as I did that have the same experience. But here we are, rolling out that same stale statistic about the incarceration rate; how it's so skewed; "please?!?"
But no, you still don't get it, how another commision will be enacted, how another racist preambled "black" organization such as the "Congressional Black Caucus," "Black Patrolmens Association" will be formed, and you all will think you're actually doing something.
Put yourself in my shoes, where you supported racial equality, got bussed to black schools against your will, and we haven't come together at all. We're further apart then we ever were.
So,,,,what's on BET tonight??
Do ya get it yet?!? Oh that's right, I'd be considered a racist for saying these things. I guess I just ain't "Wright!" -

I loved your article. I truly believe that Dr. King was one of the only, if not the only civil rights activists who spoke of ALL those who are being mistreated in ANY way, to stand up; not only African Americans, HIspanics, but for ALL to stand up for what's right!! In reference to a more diverse political culmination, while that is true, the reality is that these same individuals have to constantly defend their policies, ethics, policies to "prove" that it's not based on racial motivation. -

Poor...? In relation to what? If you make $15,000 a year, you are in the top 1% income bracket for the world.
I watched an overweight "disadvantaged" African American woman push TWO overloaded shopping carts out of the grocery store ahead of me today. AFTER paying for the entire load with...food stamps.
I am sick of hearing how "bad" negros/blacks./African-Americans/whatevers have it in this country. 70+% of the violent crime committed in this country is perpetrated by "African Americans". That judge in Atlanta didn't ask the "blacks" to leave his courtroom so he could lecture the white folk about their behavior. Bill Cosby is right, far more so than "Martin, aka "Michael" King ever could have been. -

I fund wonderful that black people still remember him and do good by his name, but as a person and human being I also fund controversial that in the year 2008, people we still make remarks about race and slavery and most often coming from the same black people. I have never heard of such an emphasized concept as ???race??? like on this country, none from the ones I have visit before, perhaps is because when we look at people we don???t look at skin color but who they really are. I dare to say what about Native American, who truly found this country and now are living in reservations? I haven???t hear I special day or right or freedom counsels for them? And they were chase out of their properties. I applaud Dr. King, but I think his message has been taken out of contest and often belittle its own race. Did I mention that I am a huge fan of Mr. Cosby, he does get it! Huge fan??? -

Ms. Wright willfully ignores any number of facts in her paean to King. He was a mediocre philosopher, and his Marxist lurch into economics was making him increasingly irrelevant in 1968--why do commentators by and large ignore that a fundamental aspect of his thought was Marxist, the most discredited political philosopher in history? Firthermore, she ignores the fact that the current crises of the African American community are largely self made, arising from an increasingly corrupt youth culture and a deliberate rejection of traditional American values of learning and hard work. In fact, it is not too far to say that the African-American community are largely wards of the state, and look to government to keep pouring money in their direction. (When the MLK Center here in Atlanta was literally falling down, how many sports stars and hip hop moguls stepped forward? And I will not discuss the obscenity of the $200+ memorial under construction in Washington.)
The African American community needs to decide--are they fully partners in the American enterprise, or do they want to be a separated community, as WEB DuBois suggested? Right now (and this stems from King confused thinking and empty rhetoric) it appears that they want both.
Personally, I'm thoroughly disgusted.

I hate to say it but a great deal of important lessons have not been enough to open the eyes of the nation. As we discuss how to stop racism, we do nothing but talk. I like what Morgan Freeman said when asked "How do we get rid of racisim?" He said, " Stop talking about it. I am going to stop calling you a white man, and I am going to ask you to stop calling me a black man."
Until the world changes how we see one another we are doomed. -

I don't want to take anything away from doctor King as he was a great person who did great things for his people but don't we realize this is 2008 and race is only an issue amongst ignorant people and black people that can't let it go. We have a black man that has a great shot to become president of this country. Do we have to go back in time and switch roles and have white people as slaves before everyone gives up on the race card. Give me a break. I play an online video game and I am constantly called "white boy". Yet some black people (and I'm not directing that at the entire race) can't seem to realize that they have as many rights as white people if not more. -

All you are saying is to throw more money the problem. The United states has spent countless millions on social programs since the 1960's, and it's never going to be enough. The only way for black, and white, Latino, etc. people to raise themselves out of poverty is to focus on a goal, stop drinking or using drugs or whatever, get out of bed in the morning, go to school or work, and do something for themselves. The government can help, but ultimately, it is up to the individual to pick themselves up. I know, because I did it. I was living in a rooming house, making less than $200 a week at a menial job. I had no college education. At 33, I finally resigned myself to make myself better. I stopped staying out late. I stopped hanging out with the wrong people. I stopped wasting my money on things like beer and cigarettes. I got up every morning at 5AM and went out and put my name everywhere I could for a better job. It took almost 5 years, but I got a union job with a company that pays well and has a future. I now am married with my own home. I did it with no help from the government.
I think this country needs more good paying, union jobs. We need to stop sending our Manufacturing overseas, and stop punishing comanies in this country with environmental laws. If the work is here, they will need workers. -
