What action should be taken to resolve the issue of racial equality in America?
Who is responsible? Are the white Americans totally responsible?
    Is the American government responsible?
Is the American individual, everyone, responsible?

Why print this article in this forum? I understand that American citizenship entitles each person the right to espouse their views. But why print this article - picture included - in THIS forum? It does minimal good, probably no real harm - but blindly places well-educated members of our race who speak here in dicast position and subjected to a diatribe and indignation that they neither deserve or should have to endure in the name of "free" speech.

    Yes - I am annoyed!

Why Even Print This Article in this forum? I understand that all Americans have citizenship rights that entitle them to espouse their ideals. But why print this article - picture included - in THIS forum? It does minimal good, probably no real harm - but blindly gives opportunity for our obviously well-educated members of our race who speak here to be ill-placed and dicast subjected to diatribe and indignation they do not deserve or should have to respond to.

Can't understand an iota of "delta" 's comment.

Jack White's us of satire to make his point is very effective.

It's also very ironical that he has the surname he has. :-)

Agree that a national conversation about race in this America is, at best, a waste of time and at worst a dangerous distraction, but not for the reasons stated. The problem is not loud-mouthed extremists (and, although I disagree with Wright about the AIDS stuff, I think he's right on target about other stuff and would not label him such) but ordinary, everyday folk who are unwilling to talk honestly. And yes I mean mostly white folks -- though, Lord knows we black folks have our blindspots and triggers around this issue. But the main one is that white America, to even begin to have the discussion, wants to set the guidelines as if both sides have equal grievances. They want to begin as if we were beginning from today, they want to ignore history and you simply can't. You can't get stuck there but you can't ignore it either.

So I agree -- let's agree to disagree about race, because neither side is ever gonna move. Let's fix the schools, housing, health care and this terrible mess Bush has left, then go back to our segregated neighborhoods and call it a day.

"Blacks reached the greatest freedoms and prosperity they've ever known" is historically inacurate and opened an opportunity for Jack White to provide a serious rebuttal. Instead, he uses an otherwise "teaching moment" to shuck and jive. I am personally appalled by this. We cannot open an intelligent dialog when everything is considered a joke. Africans were not always enslaved by whites and he should know that. None-the-less, there are generations of Black Americans that are unaware of this. I am not recommending the bringing out of false African "kings", but a reminder of African freedom, prosperity and civilation was what is in order for people like Pat Buchanan who operates from mere stereotype and wishful thinking.

Shame on Jack White and on TheRoot.
