Do we Really Need another Tanya Harding?
    By Maurice B. Thomas
So, if we are to accept both the premise and the conclusions of your writer, it is up to OBAMA to save this country from its past?

What a monumental task, to which, you will find, he is well suited and clearly able to perform..........

All of the other candidates, first criticize and then CLONE all of his programs, policies and procedures........all of his strategy and force is contained in his approach, which is consistent and even though I DO reject your writer's observation that only disciples, not WORKERS are enthusiastically part of his campaign, .........if accepted, it is YOUR observation........not the reality.

I have often observed that it is simply impossible to objectively observe any entity from the inside thereof.........subjectivity being the only possible result of such a vantage point (one movie)...and yet.....it is probably as misleading as the cited impossibility, i.e. that a crowd cannot be managed or even properly or accurately perceived by members OF the crowd, for an EXTERNAL observer to do any better than the protagonists in another movie entitled Rashomon to say of the internals of the crowd anything other than self-satisfying stuff that misleads and misinforms and even leads to unwinnable wars ..........

Now, if unwinnable wars is your objective, because you just happen to be an arms merchant........well, even then you have to acknowledge that at one point or another.....the war must end either through attrition or by some other cause other than "victory" since "victory" is both impossible and impractical, given your purposes.........

    How about a winnable war?

    Why propose an UNwinnable war?

How many arms merchants do you even know?

    Is that your JOB?

Wouldn't you love to dissolve your association with arms merchants, even were they your employer?

What happens when your kid is killed by one of the products of your own manufacture?

Did we actually congratulate Tanya Harding? Or,.......did we censure her?

    Do we NEED another Tanya?

Is THAT how we want to settle our competitive battles?

Isn't the elective process supposed to be a peaceful alternative to war?

    Or not?

If America cannot or will not move forward beyond its fear, then America will not survive period. These are biblical times, with biblical ramifications that will remain to be seen. We can talk about Obama all we want, but can't we see that the media is already judging this man like no other in history? This hits home because the Black experience in America-is America's achilles heal. BAW is already talking up questions about reparations with Barrack-that will force more conversation about what he stands for, but that's OK. Win or Lose-a man must stand on his convictions. Lately, Barrack has been treated like he stole something. This is why cynicism in politics has been over the last 40 years-been down up until now- Phoney people saying things and doing nothing has been the norm. Low voter turn out has been expected for years. That is why Republican have been riding a gravy train with doughnut wheels for quite a while. Now that a Brother is running for something of worth, disinfranshised people are going through a metamorphsis phase of actually believing this that this is a country for the people. People are believing in themselves. The candicacy of Barrack Obama is the only thing that could have done this period. At the end of the day-the spark of hope has been rekindled for all who believe in peace.

You sound as ridiculous as Michele Obama who just became proud of her country last week. I have been proud of my country all of my life and of all of those black and White people whse shoulders I stand on.

Any comment suggesting that Obama's candicacy is somehow based on the intricacies of his political savy without taking into context-the life he lived-his views of the world as it is-gives a disservice to us all. We've read Barracks literature. This is how we come to understand how this man views this country and this world. He uses hope as his strong point-because, some of us-could not or would not have been able to walk in this mans shoes. Let us accept him as he is-and stop trying to make him what we or others think he should be. Remember this: a loud wagon makes the most noise, but is empty.

I understand exactly what Michelle Obama meant. If you are Black, you must have been totally sheltered from all the racism of this country. It is hard to feel pride when you have seen Black soldiers go to war to fight for thier country, ill-trained, ill equipped; watch their comrades die; save the lives of white soldiers, and return 'home' to face more of the extreme treatments they were faced with before they left. They came home to no jobs, substandard housing and unable to care for their families. They watched others being lynched for sport. Women raped because they were there.

Is this a country you would feel pride in seeing all these things happening to a people for no reason other than that they were Black. Only in the last few years have things started to change. And today, we see an educated , eloquent, man who happens to be Black and qualiified and very intelligent, running for President of this Nation and is presenting the NEW idea of uniting all citizens towards a UNITED States of America, and that man happens to e her husband. On that day, truly, would be the day she could truly be proud of her country.

If you are not Black, please do not espouse that 'go back to Africa' garbage. We did not book passage here and have too much invested in this country to even entertain such a thought. May I suggest that you buy a few books on Black History in America.

You know, the criticism that Obama does not discuss substance is tired, and sounds like a Clinton/McCain talking point. Everytime I have heard him speak, not in sound-bites but whole speeches, I heard substance. Anyone searching for more detail should do some research.

Also, I wonder why your thin assesment fails to consider the multiple streams of influence Obama presents. His rhetoric is artful, drawing not only on religious shaping, but also the approach of grass-root political organizing that calls on the individual to lead themselves, and not wait on presidential powers to magically fix everything. The best of the civil rights organizing traditions as well as faith. Ella Baker would be proud. I would argue that his success has come in large part because of his vital and empowered local organizers. Their ownership has made his campaign dynamic and strong.

does this suggest that obama's use of religion is a misuse? how can the democrats use religion "correctly" in these times of fear and evangelicalism? or do we finally need a contemporay thomas paine?
