Amongst many other important details we can thank Barack for outing Bill Clinton; both his essence and no holes barred identity when the chips were down. Our challenge is to not be lead around but to think even more deeply. The tack Bill has chosen in support of his wife has distorted his legacy. Maybe that "identity" bit was only a seasonal play... What a crude and tactless thing to say about Hilary Clinton. That and wanting to take credit for calling Clinton a 'negro" must be why you are a former TIME Reporter. -

I always disliked it when people said that Bill Clinton was the first black president or that he was black man in a white body. Black people are so quick to try and make white people black that it is ashame. That claim can never be made and be considered non-fiction. Bill, was fine with that title as long as he was getting the black people to like him, but as soon as it was time to go to dinner, walk in a store, a competition, driving a car...then believe me 'the first black president' title goes way beneath his feet. He will never and has never persoanally experienced racial profiling, racism..... By, always wanting to fit in with white people...created that ignorant statement and now the overly influenced black people just jumped on the bandwagon and really believe in that statement. I'm glad Bill awakened you. -

That's all well and good, but who the Hell gave you (or Morrison) the authority to declare Clinton "Black" and Barack Obama "Not"? Your (and Morrison's) foolishness gave the Clintons license to play us like a saxophone! This "First Black President" made the penalty for crack higher than that for cocaine , so that more blacks are in prison; he threw Lani Guinier and Joycelyn Elders under the bus when Republicans squawked about their policies (that Bill Clinton agreed with). He executed a mentally disabled man in Arkansas and dissed Sista Souljah to show white voters the n-s don't pull his chain. And this "First Black President" didn't lift a finger to help people being slaughtered in Rwanda after stopping a similar " tribal war in Europe"!
Yes, I voted for him twice, but I don't like being played! -

So, while we all got paid during the 1990's President Clinton was a "Brother", but the minute that he begins to "act" like a brother, you want to "kick him to the curb". I disagree. I look at him as the person that's doing whatever needs to be done to get his wife the nomination. I'm sorry that you disagree with his tactics, but history will be his judge. We will know by the end of next week if he was doing what is strategically needed to get Senator Clinton the nomination.
Remember it's not personal, it's politics! What we must keep in focus is that after all of the mud has been slung, that we must unite to defeat McClain! If we do not, we can look forward to continuing the war, and them bringing more Mexicans in and building them up to become good republicans like we did the Cubans in Miami! If we continue to wear our pride on our sleeves because of what some people consider to be ???racial politics???, come November we will continue to be on the outside looking in. I vote that we keep Bill in the race. -

If Toni Morrison can figure it out why can't the "black leadership?" True Ms Morrison is by any standard a brilliant woman, and so it may be asking too much to assume that these folk are as smart, but if the senior white leadership of the Democratic Party (Kerry, Kennedy, Daschle and Bradley) can, not to mention the vast majority of plain old black folk , why can't they? -

"We Blacks can't be politically immature. Clinton didn't play the race card. The media did. The racial aspects were about as visible as Hillary's tears in New Hampshire. They weren't there either. Just because Obama is Black doesn't mean he can't be campaign against without us calling somebody racist. For Blacks to abandond Bill because of Obama is politically immature and hurts Obama in the long run. It will turn off white America. Why...they will reject Obama believing that as a Black man he'll be too sensitive to be President. Sometimes we blacks can look real petty....foolish....and then have the nerve to write about it. Bill will always be our brother....My brother". -

I don't know why you would even be concerned about who said it first. It is a ridiculous statement and should have never been put into the minds of African Americans. Bil Clinton's statement comparing Obama's win in SC to Jesse Jackson's some years back is despicable. He said to belittle Obama's apparent success and popularity with people of all ages, races, and gender, which shows he is still very much a white man who can't stand to see a black man doing well. Let me just say to all you Bill and Hillary Clinton supporters out there if Bill was black enough for you...why not Obama. And let the record show that I'm the first to say Bill Clinton was not the first black president Obama will be!!!!!!!! MJMcGlen, Waldorf, MD -

I don't know why you even care who said it first...I have always disagreed with it especially now. Bill Clinton's remarks comparing Obama's win in South Carolina to Jesse Jackson some years back is ridiculous. It was his way to belittle Obama and to make his efforts about race. I'd like to say to all you Clinton supporters out there if Bill and Hilary is black enough for you then why not Obama!!!!!! Contrary to popular belief Clinton was not the first Black president Obabma will be!!!!!!! MjMcGlen -

How unforgiving we seem to be on a misstep. Give the man a break: he's trying to get his wife elected. Why are so quick to forget the things he did whild in the White House. Maybe he's doing Obama a favor and helping to toughen him up should be get the nomination. References to race will be just the beginning. He's running for President of the United States, not a student council. Jessie did win SC and I wonder how many of us that are so sensitive now voted for the brother? Obama is the darling of of those who would not have had the courage to vote for black man before. As the Harlem rsident said in the NYTimes today: he's a "nice white middle class brother". Jessie and Al were the niggers a very few of us could come to cast a vote for. Right now everybody is voting for Obama - until they get behind the curtain on election and pull the lever. Peace, brother. -

Well, if doggin' a brotha out is all it takes for Slick Willie to get thrown out of the black race, he will have to get in line behind thousands of murderous gang bangers who are doing an exemplary job of killing young black males...and many innocent bystanders!! -

with all ude respect Mr. White, we're all a lile upset with Bill. He didn't need to go there. He got that fine Oxford educated mind and all that. So, we're temporary yanking Bill's hangout card, you dig. as for you being first, brother does that really matter in the scheme of things? Most of us feel that Bill's not getting enough nap time. That, or his medication ain't kicking in. Here in the south, the natives hate him and despise Hillary. One Christian woman, a student, told me that she'd seriously consider suicide (or some equally irrational tining) if Hillary won the White House. -

Mr. White. with all due respec, we're yanking Bill's hanging card for messing with Brother Obama. He's got such a fine Oxford- mind and all that, there's no reason he needed to go there. We need to get all these player-haters out of the way if we wanna party in the Big House. Many of us think Bill's not getting enough nap time. so, he's a little out of his mind.
As for you being first, well, we'll send you a medal and all that. With all due respect, Mr. White. E. Richard -

I don't care who was first, you and Toni should be ashamed of making that carpetbagger "black" in the first place. I still cringe to this day whenever I read Ms. Morrison's justification for saying Slick Willy was the first black President...man, don't do me any favors by "kicking" him out now that "Hillbilly" has shown their true "colors"...the damage has already been done. -

Great piece, I was taken back by Morrison's endorsement. Some may have thought she was being poetic in her comments years ago, but in fact it further underestimated, undervalued and marginalized black people in this country. -

I am offended everytime I hear about Toni Morrison's comment describing BC as America's 1st black Prez. A marginal writer at best, Morrison's comment about BC became the brunt of every comedian's schtick and now every so called mainstream news commentators mentions it. The last time I checked BC was white - I don't care if he moved his office to africa instead of Harlem and slept with a hundred black women - he's still white. Aside from the Lani Guanier and sista soulja incidents that marked BC's presidency - last week when confronted by an intelligent, charismatic and intelligent threat to the clinton political machine, what did he and his flunkies resort to? The most bigoted, ignorant and prejudicial comments he could find - something all of us men of color are confronted with whenever we look to shake up an otherwise morally bankrupt machine like "Corporate America" or in this case presidential politics. *** BC!!! -

Negro, spook? Since theroot.com, is a black-centered web-mag should I expect more liberal use of such language. Safe ground, yes? Instead of aspiring to a higher standard of language, toss *** around some because were black and we can. And really JACK, what pointless drivel. No one gives a damn who should be credited first for what toni said (and she said black, not spook or negro). Whatever point she had has been lost over the years and we still gotta live with the jokes that Bill is black due to his infidelity. Step your game up theroot.com. -
