Updated Tuesday, June 20, 2017, 3:30 p.m. EDT: Earl Maxwell, a Detroit man who police named a “person of interest” in the shooting death of a young mother of three, has been captured, police say.
According to Fox 2, Maxwell was taken into custody Tuesday in connection with the death of Latrese Morris Dorsey, who was killed in front of her 4-year-old daughter and found by her 14-year-old son.
Police are still searching for the person who killed a Detroit mother in her own home while her 4-year-old daughter looked on—and left her 14-year-old son, who heard it all happen, to end up holding his dying mother in his arms.
Police say they are searching for the woman’s ex-boyfriend Earl Maxwell, who they say is a person of interest in the case.
According to WJBK, Latrese Morris Dorsey was just getting out of a relationship with Maxwell and had recently moved into a new home with her children. Her family say that her ex was not ready for her to move on, however.
“I hate that he had that power to take that life from us, from her kids, from her father on Father’s Day,” Dorsey’s sister, Megan Morris, told the news station.
Megan Morris said that she believes Maxwell is responsible for her sister’s death, a death that has left their family shattered and their father, James Morris, distraught.
“His daughters are all he has. For him to get this call on Father’s Day—the one day where he’s supposed to be celebrating with his girls—he gets a call saying this coward ripped his life from him,” Megan Morris added.
“I had three daughters—I had three beautiful daughters—and he put a hole in my heart,” James Morris told the news station.
Dorsey, a physical therapist, was the mother of three children. Two of her kids were at home at the time of the shooting, although, thankfully, they wer physically unharmed. Her 4-year-old daughter, Jada, however, was sitting in the same room as her mother when she was shot to death.
“She was sitting in the same room. She was old enough to tell everyone, ‘My mom is dead. He killed my mom. My mom is shot,’” Megan Morris said.
Justin, Dorsey’s 14-year-old son, was in his room when he heard arguing and then gunshots, according to the report. When he ran to find his mother, she was dying.
“She took her last breaths in my nephew’s arms,” Megan Morris added.
Police told Megan Morris that her sister had been shot five times, according to the report.
Police describe Maxwell as a 38-year-old man, 5 feet 8 inches tall, with a heavy build. He is bald and has a beard and frequently wears sunglasses. He has a tattoo reading “Latrese” on his left arm.
“If you see this guy, don’t approach him. Dial 911. Call the police; let them take care of it,” James Morris said. The family say they are worried that the man may be armed and dangerous.
