Kenneth I. Chenault, the chairman and CEO of American Express, joined the company in 1981. The Bowdoin College and Harvard Law graduate became president of the U.S. division of American Express Travel Related Services Co., Inc., which produces two-thirds of AmEx's revenue, in 1993.
