Yet another sticky issue on the road to health care reform. According to the Washington Post, some Democrats are concerned about provisions in the bill that could lead to publicly-funded abortions.
The outcome of those talks could be crucial in deciding the fate of the health-care bill. Democrats need the vast majority of their caucus to back the bill, since nearly all congressional Republicans have said they will oppose the legislation.
"I will continue whipping my colleagues to oppose bringing the bill to the floor for a vote until a clean vote against public funding for abortion is allowed," Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.) said Monday in a statement. He said last week that 40 Democrats could vote with him to oppose the legislation -- enough to derail the bill.
This one is tricky, because it places being pro-choice and abortion into an already nuanced discussion. The Buzz has always felt that being pro-choice meant believing in a woman's right to make choices about her body without government interference. The ability to have an abortion without interference from the State is a part of being pro-choice.
But government-funded health insurance seems to complicate that.
How can they provide funds for a procedure that they've been told they should have nothing to do with? Right now, federal law generally bars funds for abortion except in the cases of incest, rape or to ensure the life of the mother. That appears to fall under the rubric of 'staying out of it except in extreme cases, which doesn't seem wholly unreasonable.
However, there's another angle to consider: if the government chooses to be hands-off regarding reproduction, why have a welfare system--a system which is pretty hands-on? On some level doesn't that say, "We're technically hands-off, but we'll do you a solid if you choose to do things a certain way?"
So The Buzz's question is this: While the issue of abortion hinges a great deal on moral perspectives, why should or shouldn't the government just stay out of it?*
*Yes; The Buzz is aware the government should stay out of a lot of things but doesn't.

I am a student of Earthbound physics and astrophysics studying Eienstien, Michelangelo, and DaVinci's artworks when when I tukrned on the news and heard about this horrendous act of violence due to a scientific life saving medical procedure that has been twisted and distorted for so long as mass murder for too long. I must speak out against these acts of violence in the name of something that isn't science! It is my clear intention that by the time these words are completed on this very morning, June 3rd, 2009 to intellectually prove that abortion is anything but murder it is the same process we use to help ourselves survive and can lead to many answers to questions concerning our health.
Fact-LIfe is defined as a human body able to absorb energy from all directions, which is a part of Davinci's drawing of the Renaisance man. If a body does not absorb energy from all directions and shows no movement such as a baby's cry when it is "born" the baby is called "stillborn" Now for those who need a break down, still as in "not moving or reacting to energy stimulus I.E. sneezing, coughing, tossing, turning, moving, eating, all the things that a living person does scientifically speaking the organism is not alive. During the entire growth process of a human birth the "fetus" is growing inside of a woman's womb. A woman's womb can deliver both living people and dead people as unfortunate as the reality is but the FACTS, you know the stuff that we can all see and prove over and over again on youtube, the FACT is that a fetus is not a living organism until it responds to energy, When the doctor smacks a baby it is to start a machine to get a shocking reaction so that the baby reacts properly show shock absorbtion. Since a baby can't tell the doctor "Hey man that hurt" the baby instantaneously cries showing signs of LIFE! We as a culture have to learn that not everything we see on t.v. is what really happens in the real world. First we had an entire debate on torture based on the show 24? Are you going to tell me that we've burned the very constitution that our fourfathers wrote, burning the american flag that we all fought and died for, all of our ideals such as truth, justice, and equality gone, and in it's place, torture, lies, fearmongering and now murder due to TV shows?Now with this Abortion debate, probably a few people who've seen "Look who's talking" once too many times. We are not killing baby "Mikey" which is what the entire religous movement and far right wing of the Wig party. And now I suppose this abortion debate is based on the movie "Look who's Talking" to base their definition on what life is! I've seen the movie it is my favorite Bruce Willis played a fabulous job, but that's not what actually goes on during human reproduction as a SCIENTIFIC PROCESS, you know the people who do the same stuff over and over again and know what they are talking about? Versus a religous preacher, minister or anyone of the religous community who couldn't heal the sick, feed the massive hungry with one loaf and fish, nor can walk on water yet feel they have the right to tell the rest of the world when life begins? This has to stop now. The President of the United States must address the issue of Science and intelligence. It is irresponsible, reckless and dangerous for any news organization to make outrages accusations with no legal nor scientific evidence resulting in a doctors death! This is not the practice of freedom of speech this is pure and simply physics. A human life has been taken as a result of someone calling him names. This is not an issue that is up for a debate, or spin, this is cause and effect pure and simple. If I suggest that someone should be killed and someone is killed, there is not a roundabout explanation to somehow not say that I had "nothing" to do with it, because what I said is just "words" The difference here being that in this particular case Bill O' Reilly HIMSELF personally attacked this man calling him such horrofic names that someone has taken action due to this consistant bombardment of negative suggestion. If I tell you to jump off a bridge and kill yourself, you are immediately responsible for make a clear decision in an instance due to intellect. But if I were to tell someone that they should kill themselves all the time, every day all day until they've done it, I can no longer claim that somehow because of my negative consistant influence that "I had nothing to do with it" No one would like anyone else telling them they should be murdered especially again, and again, and again, and again, and when finally someone is killed because of a lie? Because of a disagreement?
Fact-Death is defined as a human body not able to absorb energy at all. A dead body, can still respond to outside stimulus such as electricity and chemicals the same way a fetus would react to outside energy stimulus when it's getting energy from it's host. We just so happen to use the organs of a dead human body in order to advance our own science and medicine all to extend our own life! If we did not use dead bodies we would have no heart transplants which means more people would die, which means no bio-research on human skin so we cannot provide better lotion for UV protection against global warming for all of you "White People" we cannot also provide any knowledge or further insight as in how to better ressurect you if you or a loved one flatlined, if we do not use dead bodies we cannot determine how long we have to bring a person you may love back and get the body working again. Without the use of our dead bodies we cannot discover the very diseases or biological pleagues that they may carry or spread all over the united states nor can we find the it's cure or medicine due to not using our dead bodies. The reason that the person that was shot and murdered the doctor is because throughout this irrationally insane man's life, it is these very doctors that have experimented on dead fetus, and old humans alike in order to find medicine's for cures, such as small pox, chicken pox, vaccinations, tetnis shots, as well as other life saving products designed to keep you ALIVE! These devices are consistantly studied and dark practice is one of our most ugliest sides that we rarely ever want to see or discuss at our dinner tables yet in the back your mind you should always be thankful for these people for it is these very doctors who must grow and study dead fetus in order to detect early stages of disfigurements and diseases. It is this very practice of close observation along with technological imagagry enhanced that will radicalize medicine leading to the production of far more healthy babies born without defect! Imagine determining early stages of cancer, or a birth defect that you've seen so many times you know how to correct so that the fetus can grow to it's fullest and most healthiest potential. What you right wing, religous people do not know, is that you are killing the very people who are trying to save you! If you truely disagree with what the clear scientific and moral definitions of what life and death are, then you should do only one thing and one thing only. Pray.

I'm a firm pro-choicer, but I say leave this out for the sake of getting the bill passed. Abortion issues can be dealt with seperately this should not be the reason for this bill failing. Getting health care revamped is way to important to allow it to be derailed by what is in essence a side issue.
No tax dollars should fund abortion except for Rape, Mother's physical heath, or child malformations incompatable with life (such as Edwards syndrome).
Pregnancy is almost completely avoidable condition. Yet insurance companies will continue to cover it because a $700 abortion is cheaper to them than a $5000 delivery (or worse for C-sections).
Here are some reasons people support abortion funding:
- So their little girls don't have to be held accountable for their leg-spreading lifestyle and "ruin their life"
- Limit the population growth of minorities and the poor
- Give women ways to stay in the workforce without being disrupted by the reality of that nooner with pool boy.
Almost all abortions are because of some self-serving reason.
I hesitate even to advocate the Rape exclusion because I fear such a rule would encourage false rape claims.
This discussion is mostly irrelevant because of the cost considerations I already mentioned. The industry will do whatever is cheaper.
