Anthony Sowell, a Cleveland man who had already served fifteen years for raping and assaulting a woman, apparently used his freedom to kill at least five more women and bury them about his home and property.
He was arrested Saturday after police--who were there to serve him an arrest and search warrant--discovered the bodies of five decomposing women in his home and one woman in the backyard. All of the victims were African-American. From CNN:
Officers serving the warrants Thursday discovered the badly decomposed remains of two bodies on the third floor of the house, he added. A subsequent search revealed what appeared to be a freshly dug grave under the stairs in the basement. On Friday, investigators returned to the house, dug up the grave and found a third body, Stacho said.
A further search of the house and property found two more bodies in a crawl space and a sixth body in a shallow grave outside the home.
Five different burial methods were used on the victims, and the bodies were in varying states of decomposition, said Miller, which made it difficult to determine the ages of the victims.
...Yeah; he should get a fair trial--if he's crazy enough to do such a thing--but let's be honest: Ohio should save itself the aggravation and just find a cozy spot under the jail where he can contemplate whatever people like that contemplate for the rest of his born days.

Most of the ones that we know about are white but not JUST because of some inherent gene in white folks. What also contributes to this fact is that they can get away with it... WHY because the Law enforcement system is so fixated on catching black folks and people who in their minds fit the profile of a serial killer. No one would have ever thought that this street urchin looking can collector had bodies in his basement. And since no one cared enough about the victims then C'est La vie...
Yes these areas are impoverished but when someone mention crack it reminded me that so many of the professional substance abuse treatment providers are getting PAID. If you visit any reputable alcohol and substance abuse center you will see in the parking lot BMWs Mercedes and Lexus So it not just about resources
I actually worked in that catchment area about 14 years ago. As with all mental health in the United States, it is underfunded and as a result understaffed. We all worked very hard, however, the poverty, crack, and lack of additional services impede progress. Sadly, there are many people who float around there. I know that it is not politically correct to say, but as someone who truly cared about and for the mentally ill in that neighborhood, I think that I can say it. Just because it is nice to think that every ill person can benefit from "least restrictive" care, it is just not so. I can tell you some very sad stories of our efforts to get someone hospitalized and protected that failed and resulted in an adverse outcome for the client. He no doubt had parole officers etc. but I imagine the caseloads were too large for any one person to be effective.

Why was there no candlelight vigil in search of these women before this? Some of whom I'm sure must have been a mother. If this man has psychiatric issues and a criminal history , why was there no one charge of his well fare, whereabouts and mental health upkeep?
You mean he was just set free with no probation or parole or any conditions? No sex offender stipulations of treatment. Just go out there and damm the safety of the public.
have such deep psychological issues that I am not sure they can ever change - or if they want to or if it matters as long as they can't continue to do this.

Justice is one of those things that in this case will never be reached. It can only be an idea. I know these types of acts happen again and again but I wonder each time why, how, could this have been prevented early on.
As I say to my children and grandchildren be careful out there. You never know what nuts are running around.
My dear friend lives in that neighborhood. It used to be a nice middle class family place to live but the economic times over the years has left it behind.
Now, people are afraid and horrified that this could go on and they had no idea. Makes them wonder what else they should know. My thoughts go out to all the neighbors. Maybe this episode will bring some attention to a place that deserves to be held together?
