The Huffington Post is reporting that President Obama discussed the birth certificate issue during an interview with talk-show host Oprah Winfrey at a taping of her show yesterday. The interview occurred just hours after the White House made Obama's long-form birth certificate available to the free world, to quiet the controversy being lodged by the Birthers, who claim that the president is not an American citizen.

"Why did you wait so long, though?" Oprah asked the president about the timing of the release of his birth records. "When it first came up, were you thinking, I hope I was born here?" said the talk-show host jokingly.

Sitting alongside the first lady, Obama said, "Can I just say I was there, so I knew," adding, "I knew I had been born. I remembered it," he said in jest. The president noted that baseless skepticism raised by critics regarding his birthplace has been an issue for more than two years. He said that the decision to release the records came in hopes that the ordeal could be put aside.

"I said to my team, look, even though this is not usually what the state of Hawaii does," he explained, "even though the Republican governor of Hawaii, the Democratic governors of Hawaii, all the various officials, had confirmed that I was born here, let's ask them for a special dispensation where they will go ahead and provide us with the original to see if we can put this to rest."

We're absolutely sure that this issue will not be put to rest, because the issue that prompted it has not been put to rest: racism. Folks need to accept that we have a black president. People are losing their minds and plenty of sleep over an issue that is completely fabricated in order to justify their personal demons.

Why should the nation or the president be held hostage by a group of zealots? The most popular of them all, Donald Trump, has been quiet about the results but loud about claiming that it was his prompting that led to the release of the long-form birth certificate. We are so glad that we don't live in bizzaro world like Trump. We're also glad that we aren't plagued by the tiny minds of extremists who spew lies and venom because they can't deal with the reality of a black man in the nation's highest office.
