Obama Should Be Pro-Life Because He's Black?
In the continuing creative use of President Obama's race by his political opponents, GOP hopeful Rick Santorum (actually, in a recently unearthed interview from back in January 2011) suggested that Obama should be pro-life because -- you guessed it -- he's black. The Huffington Post has the clip and a partial transcript of the comments:
The question is ... is that human life a person under the constitution? And Barack Obama says no. Well if that human life is not a person then ... I find it almost remarkable for a black man to say "now we are going to decide who are people and who are not people."
What we find "almost remarkable" is the way conservatives shamelessly attempt to racialize the abortion debate. And we're pretty certain that the idea that African Americans have a slavery-related moral high ground isn't one that Santorum will bring up in any other, less politically convenient context.
Voters of all colors who support a constitutional ban on abortion as this candidate does should be offended by the idea that race would have any bearing on their views on the totally unrelated issue.
