MLK Memorial Dedication: On, Rain or Shine

Update: Sunday's dedication has been postponed, as have other events surrounding the memorial. We'll bring you the latest details on new dates as they unfold.

Earlier:

The Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial, a 4-acre commemorative site on the National Mall, will be officially dedicated on Aug. 28, on a weekend when meteorologists say the nation's capital may feel the effects of Hurricane Irene.

But the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial Project Foundation plans to proceed with the dedication, rain or shine.

It issued a statement today letting guests know that "distractions" -- including the effects of Tuesday's earthquake -- won't interfere with the event any more than they did the civil rights leader's work:

Yesterday's earthquake damaged the National Building Museum, the venue for our opening event: "Honoring Global Leaders for Peace." In order to still hold this event, we are moving it to the Washington Convention Center. That is the only change in the schedule.

Dr. King showed unshakeable strength against daily distractions on the way to reaching the dream. We look forward to honoring him and so many others starting this evening. We invite everyone to join us throughout the week and on the Mall on Sunday -- come rain or shine.
