Milwaukee: 34 Percent of Black Men Unemployed
News One is reporting that 34 percent of African-American males in Milwaukee are unemployed. The loss of jobs in the manufacturing sector is the main reason. Close to 56,000 jobs were lost in the city during the recession, many of them in manufacturing. A key source of jobs for African-American male high school graduates has been lost. Milwaukee is the first city in the nation to develop a task force to address black male unemployment, which is crucial, since it is obviously at a crisis level.
We're glad that the city of Milwaukee is being proactive in solving this crisis. What does it mean for the black community when 34 percent of its men are unemployed? We've got to get a handle on the jobs crisis, which is decimating black communities. Can you say "job creation"?
