Eric Holder has a family—and an all-American one, at that. That’s the first thing Democrats wanted everyone to know about Barack Obama’s attorney general nominee this morning. Before we got to Marc Rich and Puerto Rican nationalists and gun rights, Democrats wanted everyone to see the man who would be the first black AG as a human being. His brother is a transit cop. His sister-in-law was the late Vivian Jones, the young woman who bravely integrated University of Alabama. His dad is a Caribbean immigrant who worked hard and educated his kids in New York City public schools. Holder himself is a 30-year civil servant in the department.
All that said, the most relevant words Holder spoke, politically, in his opening were these: “I made mistakes.” His gamble is he will take the flame out Republican criticism over Bill Clinton’s Marc Rich pardon by copping to the error plainly. Ranking Republican Sen. Arlen Specter is not buying it—throwing Holder’s very experience back in his face, saying his long record makes it difficult to “slough it off as a mistake.” Whatever the outcome, the testy exchange between Holder and Specter made it clear that, unlike previous confirmation hearings, this one will have fireworks.
We’ll see how well the Democrats move the conversation past pardons and on to torture, presidential power, political hirings, civil rights and the host ways in which the Justice Department has collapsed—or, been destroyed—over the past eight years.

To support Mr. Obama is not to give approval to all of his appointees. Eric Holder is a President Grant scandal waiting to happen. How could he omit from his Judiciary Committee hearing file his ties to the Illinois governor when that dust has yet to settle? How can he be a member of the Columbia University Board of Trustees and not expect that role not to be dubious? While he may be a blessing to the administration there that was pro-Clinton before supporting its own alumnus, Mr. Obama, he is still part and parcel of what the school represents and is privy to its pros and cons.
Is he ready to deal with the spectre of how Columbia has too much undue influence over and with NYPD and the Manhattan DA's office when crimes occur on campus? How will the AG office look when Columbia's constant noncompliance with FDNY raises questions about campus safety and disaster preparedness? Try the conflict of while many ex-NYPD officers head campus security, it is full of bigots and those who disgraced NYPD such as this individual hired after this flap.

Then there was the recent admission and housing for the impostor of a young South Carolina woman missing over seven years who managed to avoid detection and capture before exiting. Lawmen from her state got no cooperation until a court order was issued.

Just this week, a retired NYPD detective blinded in one eye when Puerto Rican nationalists bombed a building has been on the local news protesting the Holder nomination due to his direct role in pardonng the attackers. The fray at the Minutemen forum was neither contained by security heads present nor was a white man IDed who got in without one who kicked a student in the head until after the programme, the media tracked him down as a mere supporter of the vigilantes.
Is Washington and the national populace aware that Columbia is embroiled in the displacement of Harlem residents and businesses with its expansion plan that threatens to abuse eminent domain as a private developer to all that do not acquiesce? How many are aware that the already raging asthma epidemic that is higest in Harlem of all America will be worsened by the massive destruction and construction of the expansion plan? How many know that world-famous 125th Street is over an eaerthquake fault and originates at a Hudson River flood plain? Why didn't Columbia want Harlem when the factories and industries left and the drug menace was there for the residents to defeat? Whites never left Harlem, keeping absentee landlordship over many properties, thus undermining true blockbusting.
As for civil rights, the same Bollinger-Kasdin team of Michigan affirmative action fame is awash in rampant abuses of individual rights and more. There is no due process for any student or staffer called to a disciplinary hearing. Even since Eric Holder's board tenure, he and his peers have become subject of a lawsuit that will not go away peacefully by an Indian-American documenting dismissal and removal from campus when he tried to form a campus group to address travesties of justice that neither the campus hierarchy or EEOC office would, including sexual harassment and bias by and among the security office located on the ground floor of the administration building where the campus heads keep offices.
"The road to hell is (indeed) paved with good intentions." Some apologies are too little, too late, especially when one has not walked in the shoes of the ones who suffered due to his or her actions or inaction that could have prevented or redressed the problem.
Unlike Governor Richardson, who is confident of vindication, yet resigned before his nomination hearing, it will be intersting to see how Eric Holder prevails as "an officer of the court, sworn to uphold the law", period, when it comes to the Illinois governor and Columbia University.
