FAMU Student Leaders Sign Anti-Hazing Pledge
After the alleged hazing-related death of a band member at Florida A&M University, student leaders have continued the national discussion about the dangerous practice by signing a pledge to stand against hazing. BlackAmericaWeb reports:
Student Government Association President Breyon Love said it was time for the students to do something together in response to the death of Robert Champion Jr., who died on Nov. 19, following the band's performance in Orlando at the Florida Classic featuring FAMU and Bethune-Cookman University. The 26-year-old from the suburbs of Atlanta was said to have gone through a ritual called "Crossing the C Bus" prior to his death.
Authorities in Orange County, Florida have said hazing is suspected as a contributing factor in Champion's death, but no one has been charged, according a spokeswoman with the Orange County Sheriff's office.
Champion's death has set off a series of reactions from the Florida governor's office to the university band hall.
The event Monday night however, was one organized by students for students.
"The gym was filled to capacity, more than 1,200 students," Love told BlackAmericaWeb.com. "We pledged to clear the campus of this culture of hazing and focus on respect and dignity."
The pledge was signed by campus organizational leaders, he said.
