Crazy Talk: Rappers Do It -- Why Can't I?
Rush Limbaugh's offensive comments about student Sandra Fluke have caught the nation's attention. And he now has a brand-new and totally unconvincing line of defense when it comes to his derogatory language: Rappers do it all the time.
Think of the things we could all do in our daily lives if this actually made a good excuse!
From the Huffington Post:
After Limbaugh referred to Fluke as a "slut" and a "prostitute" (in addition to a number of other offensive comments) for advocating that insurance companies cover birth control, he issued an apology saying his words were "insulting." But in response to the continued flight of advertisers from his show -- a number that now totals close to a dozen sponsors -- he expressed his outrage at his unfair treatment in a culture that has tolerated such language elsewhere, like rap music.
"You talk about a double standard," Limbaugh said in a post on his website. "One of the greatest illustrations of it is that rappers can practically say anything they want about women, and it's called art."
One minor difference could be that most rappers don't claim to be trying to warn Americans about the deterioration of morality in society, like Limbaugh does. But if he wants to use rappers as touchstones of acceptable behavior, we can't wait to see what he comes up with next and how his listeners and sponsors will react.
