Bill Clinton Almost Persuaded Kendrick Meek to Drop Out of Senate Race Twice
Former President Bill Clinton nearly convinced Florida Democrat Kendrick Meek to drop his Senate bid -- twice. The thought was that Meek would bow out of the race and encourage his supporters to vote for Republican-turned-independent candidate Charlie Crist. This move would help keep Republican Marco Rubio, who is leading both candidates and poised to be a national figure for the Republican party, out of the Senate. Crist would caucus with the Democrats if elected to Congress. Meek changed his mind after his wife convinced him that he could win. A Quinnipiac University poll released today found Rubio leading Crist 42 percent to 35 percent among likely voters, with Meek at 15 percent. In the words of ghetto prophetess Willona Woods, "Now, ain't that a blip." Selling out the brother to help Charlie Crist, of all candidates, make it to the Senate.
