It's never too late for justice.
Such is the case for Thomas and Meeks Griffin, former landowners--and relatives of radio jock Tom Joyner--who were put to death in 1913 for the murder of John Lewis, a wealthy white landowner.
Wednesday, both men were unanimously pardoned posthumously by the state of South Carolina, a first. From the Washington Post:
The talk show host and legal historian Paul Finkelman then began to work to clear the Griffins' names because they thought they were framed by another man who was linked to the victim's stolen pistol. John "Monk" Stevenson testified against the others in exchange for a life sentence, but later told fellow inmates the four men had nothing to do with the crime and he pointed his finger at them to save himself.
Joyner and his attorney made a presentation to the state parole and probation board on Wednesday, then left the room while the board voted.
Joyner said he waved his hands and hugged family members when he got word of his great uncle's pardons.
"This won't bring them back, but this will bring closure. This is a very good day," he said.

The grief sadness and anger that I must assume the family of the Joyners feel is extraordinary.
I agree with The Black Whole above. There is no pardon for a death sentence already carried out. The insanity of this story and the immensity of the injustice is one of the continued aspect of abuse that people have suffered in the country over the past 500 years.
I cannot believe that any other people would considered this pardon adequate (which by the way is a forgiveness of guilt) so I hope expunged along with apologies, an trials for those guilty of this farce along with reparations are due to the families to correct this inhuman tragedy.
I was reading the response of Dr. Gates and the words used by a Black Newscaster on CNN and I was astounded that words justice and pardon was being used. Their willingness to be joyful and praise the European Americans who assisted in defending the wrongly executed men was sad and leaves this Black man curious as to who we should look to for strong leadership in speaking at the preciousness of Black life.
Imagine the response if this were white men unjustly executed by a Black system of justice (if there was any way possible for a situation like this to exist, which I do not want anyway as I abhor the willingness to kill so easily that America continues to enjoy).
There is a time for just anger and this is that time. It is not necessary for anyone to be so quick to praise European Americans for behaving in the list bit humanely.
You wonder why Black youth don't respect themselves. Why should they. They see the value of their lives by the lack of righteous indignation on the part of us Grown Men. I do not stand apart from the blame.
Anyone reading this please know that you are beautiful and that you deserve justice and that your life is worth fighting for. I am saddend that two innocent men were killed and I am sadded for all of the loss of life that is routinely occuring here and around the world.

If Mr. Joyner feels some sense of closure out of this...that's his right, We 'spoze; but what needz 2 start happenin' in THIS country iz 4 those who do wrong 2 pay for their crimes...n' dat INCLUDES the "cops", prosecutors AND judges who ALL TOO OFTEN KNOWINGLY turn a blind eye or serve directly in the MISCARRIAGE of JUSTICE!
