KEITH JOSEF'S BLOG ROLL

Racial Nags and Other Weekend Fun

On Friday Ta-Nehisi Coates over at the Atlantic dug up Queen Latifah's SNL Excedrin for Racial Tension clip.  That popular faux commercial about the nagging pain that accompanies curiosity-driven whites.  Don't act like you don't know what I'm talking about.  Those "can I touch your hair?" "do you wash your hair?" "where can I get some good soul food?" painful curiosities.

I appreciate Ta-Nehisi for pulling that baby out of the closet. Over the weekend a co-worker of a friend, a woman I've meet at least three times, innocently introduced me to her husband as "Jamal".  I broke out in laughter.  The woman apologized and said, "I don't know why I keep wanting to call you Jamal."  I replied, "Cuz I'm Black."  If I took over-the-counter medication I would have popped an Excedrin right then and there.  Nagging attacks like that can slice three years off a black man's life.  So I did the smart thing.  I darted over to the nearest Vitamin Shoppe for three quick drops under the tongue of Oil of Oregano.  It knocks out the pain from a racial nag in seconds, and the flu (in case you were interested). And yes, black folks get the flu.

I'm thinking that a group of us should publish a book of racial nags.  First, we'll need to compare and contrast.  I'll start. Do you know anything about the Blues? (asked by the non-Black girlfriend of my white neighbor upon meeting her).  Do you know of a good dance spot in Brooklyn? (asked by a random white couple while I was standing on the corner, Trader Joe's bag in tow, waiting for the B52 bus).  And ultimately, Do you know where to get good weed? (wait! this was asked by a buddy of mine, black, who was visiting Los Angeles from Queens).

Try having locks. Folks will simply reach out and touch them, like they don't belong to me. I'm like, uh, that's my space.

    Welcome to Shopping →→→ http://www.icfshop.com
I wish you a happy shopping

Well, some folks are natually curious and as long as they aren't rude or don't have negative social intellegence, no harm, no foul. Personal space issues aside (honestly, touching acquantance's hair Yuck)

I have lived all over the world (courtesy of Uncle Sam) and have, as a result become something of a culture vulture. When we first moved here we absorbed the culture like a sponge, and our new friends and neighbors loved that we were so "into" being New Orleanians.

I personally have no compunctions asking my Sicilian neighbors where to get good Italian food, come to think of it, she was delighted to come to my house and make St. Joseph cookies with me last year, because I was genuinely interested in how to make them. Nor did we have much shame about getting into the whole second line and Social aid and Pleasure thing - I think when you are genuinely and respectfully interested in new cultural experiences it shows and people are happy to share.

No, it's not that bad, but I LOVE the comments on The Root.com!

I don't think I've ever asked to touch a black person's hair. Or asked about their (or anyone's) hygiene regiment either.

The random couple asking about a dance club, could have just been a random thing. If you look like a local, people assume you know the area.

I think people are just naturally curious about stuff they aren't familiar with. I'm in the Air Force, stationed on an Army post, and the Army constantly asks me about rumors they've heard. The main one being "Is it true you get Substandard Living Allowance when stationed on Army posts?" NO!!!! It's not true! Generally, I'm patient with them, and explain we get paid by the exact same people. I would rather someone ask me than glare at me because they think I get extra money because I'm "too good" to be stationed with them and need to be compensated financially.

I'm not saying it's the same thing, but it's the only thing I can think of to compare...

In my 47 years of living, all over thanks to uncle sam, I've never been asked those type of questions. You hang around shallow people Keith.

Aw, good point. I remember seeing a few black friends (girls and in elementary school) with their hands in the hair of other white girls. Maybe you should comprise you a list yourself and get that baby published.
