Rihanna Gives Love the Middle Finger

I don't think I've ever actually heard Rihanna.

Sure, she's a singer--someone who makes their living hocking their vocal chords---yea, OK, fine, whatever. But unlike MJ or Elvis or Whitney, I can't call up Rihanna's voice in my head and imagine what she'd sound like ordering greasy Chinese at 2 a.m., cussing out the cable guy after waiting for six hours, or maybe reciting Shakespeare. So as I watched the snippet of the pop star's 20/20 interview with ABC's Diane Sawyer, which airs in its entirety this Friday at 10 p.m., I was surprised to actually hear her voice, her real voice. The one Robyn uses when she's not Rihanna and the one we've been waiting to hear since both women (the real one and the one we've imagined) were attacked by her ex-boyfriend Chris Brown--a chatty Cathy if there ever was one.

The voice I listened to this morning was more powerful than the one we've all heard ululating about umbrellas. It cracked from time to time--especially when Rihanna said Chris' name as if he were the Lord Voldemort of domestic violence--but it was clear, crisp and confident, too. Instead of being rehearsed, her answers were real. "I didn't want people to think I fell in love with that person. That's embarrassing," she told Sawyer. "It's completely normal to go back. You start lying to yourself the minute the physical wounds go away," she continued, sounding not like a girl or a victim.

Then toward the end of the teaser video Robyn and Rihanna seemed to merge--a real woman giving some bad-ass advice. "I will say that to any young girl going through domestic violence, don't react off of love. Eff love."

LOL!

I'm sure she's been interviewed plenty of times, but since I don't keep up with the latest acts, the 20/20 piece was the first time I actually paid any attention to Rihanna's voice...got that pinch of an accent in there!

Interesting what a youngster has to say about it compared to a seasoned adult. We all make mistakes, some more difficult to overcome than others. It is up to us to decide which ones are forgivable, not what the impact might have on someone else's lives.

Gilbert3672:

The point of the article has gone completely over your head.

That is the reason why so many Black women and girls feel like they have no one in their corner and suffer in silence. That is the reason why so many Black women and girls exhibit behaviors indicative of Stockholm Syndrome. That is the reason why so many Black women and girls die at the hands of an absolved abuser. Eff the anti-snitching nonsense. That poisonous ideology is further erroding our cesspool of a community.

We are women. It's perfectly normal and healthy to share our good and bad experiences so that we can learn from and help one another. That's what we're supposed to do as sound human beings.

And what "rules" were Chris subscribing to when he was making his promo rounds in the White media discussing the beating incident? When he said in the White media that Oprah should've offered him help? (so typical of baby boys) When he released those intimate photos of he and Rihanna during "happier" times to the White media?

She's not "destroying" him; he already did that on his own.

There's no proof to the allegations that she cheated w/ Jay-Z, gave him herpes, or abused him.

I guess Chris, like all baby boys, is always going to be the victim.

I don't know who is advising this young woman, but it can't be anyone concerned for her career or her mental state. When the news was first reported, I was surprised to learn how young both she and Chris Brown actually are-where are their parents in all this?

They are both so young. They should be out and about having the time of their lives, dating whomever they please, and working on their respective careers. Neither of them need to be in such a serious, heavy relationship at this time in their lives.

An in-depth interview with Diane Sawyer can't be good for her career in the long run; is Diane going give her good advice for her career, for her development as a woman? No. That is what's needed here, not more drama. Both Chris and Rihanna unfortunately have to grow up in the public eye, and they need to be mentored on how to do so in a manner that will not destroy their future lives.

While I am glad Rihanna is a survivor, I think she is still a young girl trying to play a grown up woman. She has no business being in such a serious relationship at her age and she needs to take responsibility for her own actions and stop pointing the finger at Chris. She is just as spoiled as he is. As a woman who has also endured several years of abuse from a former husband, I still did not try to destroy him. Further as many women of color know, we do not air our dirty laundry in the white media. If Rihanna is not careful to whom she listens, she will destroy not only Chris but herself, too.

Ok I heard her. And I mostly agree. But we still don't know what happened. Now is it any of our business. No but I don't eithe should say a word if they don't tell it all
I don't want to keep hearing the same old canned answer.

I think we all agree that no matter what she did she did not deserve
that beat-down. But I would like everyone to remember there is her side and there is
his side and the real truth is somewhere in between.
So hold off on making her this angelical being.

God bless Miss Robyn for standing up and admitting the ugly truth. She is a remarkable young woman who will find true love worthy of her one day.

...when this young man decided to beat the woman he claimed to love. And it wasn't the first time, it was just the worst time.

I think that Rihanna knows the difference between looooove and love. Now, she's got to walk it like she talks it.
