Black College Wants to Save Black Boys

African-American boys are dropping out of school.  African-American boys are killing each other.  African-American boys are entertaining Americans with songs about sexing pubescent girls and there's not one worthy ounce of outrage. [Yes, I'm still salty about Lil' Wayne's horrid display of manhood at the BET Awards].  But there's hope in the Heartland.  Kentucky State University's president Mary Sias wants to open up a boarding school for black males.  She's committed to increasing black male college enrollment by putting black boys in college before they begin college.  Full time.  Sias' boarding school project will open the doors of KSU to at least 50 boys.  They'll have their own teachers, principal and they'll live in the dorms.  Unless I'm late in the game, I haven't heard of anything like this for black boys.  And I hope it works.  A friend just told me his witty and intelligent cousin dropped out of high school when he was sixteen and did absolutely nothing for five years.  The cousin recently started working as a stock boy at a local grocery store.  My heart nearly cracked.  I'm tired of hearing these stories. I wish KSU's Mary Sias plenty of positive strategy.  Black boys certainly need rescuing.

I give her credit . . . but it's really sad and embarassing that someone has always got to go
over and beyond . . . to help African American childeren because we refuse to get off of
our behinds and do it ourselves.

I never buy from discount louis vuitton, the price is expensive and I always bought online.

Hi, everybody here, I just spent more than 1000 USD in louie vuitton and bought one gift for my wife, I think it’s worth and the bag drives my wife crazy.

Anybody knows the numbers of louis vuitton outlet in CA, I need to call them and get my bag repaired

...that once again, someone steps in to do the job that we...black parents...should be doing. It IS embarrassing.

their parents ARE the problem and it's a good idea to remove them from their parents. Besides it is only temporary...when school is in session. Some of these boys can't do better because their parents aren't showing them how to BE responsible adults. I'm not saying that is the case for all of the boys. But it maybe for some of them. And getting a break from their neighborhoods and parents may be all the motivation they need.

I didn't look at it that way. Removing boys from their parents. Mmm....

This is the second time I've read about the BET awards. I read an article yesterday by Dr. Janet Taylor entitled "Shame on You BET" http://www.momlogic.com/2009/06/shame_on_you_bet.php I didn't catch the show but apparently it has struck a nerve among some in our community.

With regard to Mary Sias wanting to open a boarding school for black males, I thinks its wonderful that she is taking the initiative. I applaud anyone who is willing to step up and at least try to be part of a solution. Even if it doesn't work out, people like her are the kind of people our communities needs more of. So often when we criticize those who perpetuate problems in our communities we fail to acknowledge that if we are not active in bringing about a solution, then we too, are part of the problem.

This is a truth that many don't want to hear. But it is what it is.

It could work but it's sad that we have to start removing black boys from their own parents and homes in order to give them a fighting chance at success.

If i'm not mistaken, the idea of race and gender exclusive charter schools have been deemed unconstitutional even though that would have been a better idea. Keeping children at home and giving them a place where it's ok to be a kid and where being studious is not looked at as being white or gay but as being normal.

Godspeed to her in her efforts and even though she wont be able to put a dent in the number of Black boys needing such an intervention, if it works she will hopefully have provided one way of attacking this problem.
