A struggling college student has got to do what he’s gotta do, even if he is the son of acclaimed movie director John Singleton.

Singleton’s son, Maasai Mohandas Singleton, created a GoFundMe page to raise money for his college tuition. Maasai is a senior in the University of Southern California’s Writing for Screen and Television program.

On his GoFundMe page, Maasai explains that his dad recently told him that he would not be paying for his tuition, which puts him in a particular bind, since he’s a senior and needs to graduate.

“The timing of this information is such that I’m not able to apply for many financial aid options that would otherwise be available,” Maasaid explains.

“I’ve met with the financial aid office, and even with loans, I simply won’t be able to make up for the nearly $30,000 due this semester to cover the final 20 units that I need to graduate. Tuition is due in just three weeks,” he continued.

Maasai says that he’s hoping to raise at least $6,000—an amount that will allow him to set up a payment plan to pay the rest off and “still go to school.”
