After receiving a ton of complaints about its Moana Halloween costume, Disney has pulled the costume and will no longer sell it.
Many people felt the costume, and other products, were basically a form of “brownface” and depicted Polynesian stereotypes. Items that were removed include the Halloween costume and a pajama set for kids, both styled after demigod Maui, the fictional character played by Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson.
“The team behind Moana has taken great care to respect the cultures of the Pacific Islands that inspired the film, and we regret that the Maui costume has offended some,” a Disney representative said Wednesday. “We sincerely apologize and are pulling the costume from our website and stores.”
