A 20-year-old college student may face prison time for “making terroristic threats” and hefty fines after posting “an experimental literary piece and an art project” on his Tumblr page. Caleb Clemmons, a psychology major at Georgia Southern University, was arrested within hours of publishing an entry on his blog that read “i plan on shooting up georgia southern. pass this around to see the affect it has.” He’s been sitting in a jail cell since making the post on Feb. 8, Gawker reports. His trial is set to start in a few days.
Clemmons claims that he never had any intention of carrying out the attack and that the entire thing was an experiment. That school administrators didn’t see a need to alert the campus after the investigation — they said in an email that “there was no continuous threat” — seems to confirm his claim. Police concluded that Clemmons had neither weapons nor plans for an attack.
His current bond is set at $20,000, and a GoFundMe site has been set up to help raise the money. “Though Caleb might have chosen the wrong time to post a prank,” his mother said, “his present punishment and possible fate is beyond my comprehension.”
