Video of Anti-Gay Attack on Black Teen Sparks Outrage
A video uploaded on the website WorldStarHipHop of a group of teens beating a black teenager in Atlanta has local and federal authorities searching for the attackers, according to the Huffington Post.
The video, which runs for 30 seconds, shows three black teenagers attacking another black teenager when he walks out of a local store. During the attack, the suspects shout gay slurs at the young man. One of the attackers in the clip, reportedly part of an Atlanta gang called the Pittsburgh Jack City Gang, shouts "No fa--ots in Jack City."
FBI officials are working to determine if the actions in the video violate federal law, including the hate crime statute.
Sharon Stapel, executive director of the Anti-Violence Project, told the Washington Post that the video was disturbing and disappointing in this day and age. "It's a really tragic and clear reminder of what the reality is like for some in the LGBT community, and how senseless and incomprehensible it is that someone would attack someone just because they thought they were gay."
The victim in the clip has yet to come forward, and police are asking anyone with information about the incident to call Zone 3 police officers at 404-624-0674 or to call Crime Stoppers Atlanta anonymously at 404-577-8477.
The video-uploading disease that seems to have infected so many black youths continues to expose the dark side that resides in many of our communities. We hope these kids are caught and appropriately punished for this heinous crime.
