Michelle Obama made another appearance on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno last night, and it’s no surprise that in addition to the stories about her trip to the Olympics, the kiss-cam moment seen around the world and the celebration surrounding the celebration of the Supreme Court’s decision upholding the Affordable Care Act, the host wanted to discuss what she thought of Paul Ryan as Mitt Romney’s running mate.
Remember, Ryan is the guy who just called her husband “part of the problem,” and who President Obama says has the “wrong vision for America.”
But Mrs. Obama’s been in the game for a while now, and she didn’t take the bait. She jumped right over making a value judgment about Ryan, saying that she hadn’t “spent much time thinking about” the selection. Instead she welcomed him to the campaign trail. “I hope that he and his family embrace the opportunity, which I know they will, to get out there and meet people in this country,” she added.
We can bet the joys of campaigning are not what she and the president discuss behind closed doors when Ryan’s name comes up, but it works for late-night television.
Plus, there were other things to talk about. Leno and the first lady were joined by all-around gymnastics gold medalist Gabby Douglas, who chatted about everything from healthy eating (or lack thereof — she got a hard time from the nation’s top nutrition advocate for admitting to indulging in McDonald’s) to how she learned to navigate a 4-inch-wide balance beam.
