Well, when it comes to making up racially inspired stories about the scary black president and his "other"-ness, we have to give credit where credit is due. This allegation is much fresher and tied better to current events than the usual panic over his religion and birth certificate: A top Southern Baptist official has accused President Obama of using the Trayvon Martin shooting to foment racial strife and boost his re-election chances.

"This is being done to try to gin up the black vote for an African-American president who is in deep, deep, deep trouble for re-election and who knows that he cannot win re-election without getting the 95 percent of blacks who voted for him in 2008 to come back out and show they are going to vote for him again," Richard Land, president of the Southern Baptist Convention's Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission and the denomination's top public-policy official, said on his radio program on March 31.

Right. President Obama seized upon the Trayvon case because he has always depended on a separatist, black-power platform to get support from African Americans, and he has every incentive to give conservatives even more of a reason to stir up racial anxiety among white voters. Or not. Try again, Land.
