The hard line on budget cuts that the GOP is taking in Wisconsin and New Jersey and on Capitol Hill could cause a backlash against its philosophies and -- eventually -- its officeholders.

Some of the measures Republicans want to enact make fiscal sense, but some also project a message that when it comes to planning for the future, Republican philosophy means more than the American people. For the crowd that crowed about the fear of socialism at former Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other Democrats during the past two years, the last thing Republicans can afford to do is allow philosophical extremism to drive their leadership. If this perception continues throughout 2011, Republicans can expect to have to fight off a revolution of their own -- one that will push back against their budgetary cuts and, eventually, will push back against Republicans at the polls, as well.
