In 2008, former NBA center Shelden Williams married WNBA superstar Candace Parker. The two have a 7-year-old daughter. Shortly after Parker helped the Los Angeles Sparks win the 2016 WNBA title and earned the series MVP, Williams hit her with divorce papers. And get this: Williams, a former Duke standout who played six seasons in the NBA and made more than $12 million, is demanding spousal support. Williams is also asking that Parker pay his attorney fees and that the two have joint custody of their daughter, TMZ Sports reports.
Divorce documents viewed by the sports site indicate that the couple separated back in August and have been living apart. WNBA players, no matter how famous, make a paltry salary in comparison with their NBA counterparts.
At best, Williams was merely a role player during his six-year NBA career, yet he was still able to amass millions in earnings. Parker just earned her team the WNBA title, for which she was given MVP honors, and she makes low six figures. She must also play overseas in order to make a little more than $1 million per year.
Williams is citing irreconcilable differences as the reason for the couple’s split.
