President Barack Obama had a stern message for Donald Trump on Tuesday: “Stop whining and go try to make [your] case to get votes.”
Obama’s message for Trump came during a news conference with Matteo Renzi, the Italian prime minister, in the Rose Garden. In recent days, Trump has made several claims that the election process is rigged for him to lose.
Obama noted that he’d never seen a presidential campaign like Trump’s that “discredit[s] the elections” before any votes are even cast, the New York Times reports.
“One of the great things about America’s democracy is we have a vigorous, sometimes bitter political contest, and when it’s done, historically, regardless of party, the person who loses the election congratulates the winner, reaffirms our democracy and we move forward,” Obama said, the Times reports.
“I have never seen in my lifetime or in modern political history, any presidential candidate trying to discredit the elections and the election process before votes have even taken place,” Obama added. “It’s unprecedented. It happens to be based on no facts.”
