  • Bio:

Nasir bin Olu Dara Jones or Nas is regarded as one of the best to ever have done it, bar none. The thing that has always separated Nas from his peers and even his one-time nemesis Jay Z, is that while Nas has kept one foot firmly ensconced in the streets, he has always had a strong sociopolitical streak running through his music and actions. From his 2010 collaboration album with Damian Marley, the proceeds of which went to African charities, to his support of the Dream Defenders, to his particularly visible presence during the Trayvon Martin tragedy, referring to the U.S. as "barbarian" on Anderson Cooper's "Race and Justice in America" special, Nas remains a "race man" through and through. This year, he invested an undisclosed six-figure sum into Mass Appeal Magazine, for which he will serve as the publication's associate publisher, yet another nod to his support of the culture of hip-hop.
