  • Bio: Author Jesmyn Ward makes our list for telling the story of her life and the lives of the black men she has known and loved in her new book, Men We Reaped. Her work puts human faces on the all-too-familiar stats we read about the deaths of young black men. The book is a painful, yet beautifully written memoir that chronicles the lives of five black men, including Ward's brother and cousin, who died much too soon. Previously she wrote two novels, the award-winning Salvage the Bones and Where the Line Bleeds. Ward's work is always brave, timely and necessary. Visit her website and like her Facebook page.
