When it came time for the White House to pick someone to head its Initiative on Educational Excellence for African Americans, it outdid itself by selecting the tenacious David J. Johns. Johns, who was an education policy adviser in the Senate for six years and a policy adviser to the Obama campaign in Nevada, graduated cum laude from Columbia University in 2004 with a triple major: English, creative writing and African-American studies. He also taught elementary school in New York while working on his master's degree in sociology and educational policy. In his new role with the White House, Johns will look for ways to best improve academic achievement among African American students "from cradle to career."
