Hurricane Katrina happened in 2005, and rebuilding what was lost has taken time. Rep. Cedric Richmond has been at the forefront of coastal restoration projects, finding funding for disaster relief -- not only for the destruction caused by Katrina but that created by Hurricane Isaac and other natural disasters that ravished the area.

Richmond was only 7 when his father died, leaving his mother, a public school teacher and small business owner, to raise him alone in eastern New Orleans. Despite such hardship, Richmond found success, joining the Louisiana State Legislature at age 27.
