  • Bio: Since taking over the reins of Ebony three years ago, Amy DuBois Barnett has revamped the
iconic African-American periodical and website, bringing the plight of young black men to
its fore while doing so. This year the author and seasoned editor established an educational
partnership with the White House, introduced the "Saving Our Sons" editorial series and
produced the striking September 2013 issue, themed "We Are Trayvon," in commemoration
of slain teen Trayvon Martin. The issue, which had four covers featuring the Martin family
as well as celebrities and their sons in hoodies, was a social media sensation. Says Barnett,
"As a mother of a young black boy, the tragedy of Travyon Martin affected me deeply. We
simply cannot allow the conversations on this issue to come to a standstill."
